... interesting once in Spain. I had visited the Picos some five years ago on the way back from Morocco and knew it had mountains, was a bikers haven and worthy of some further exploration. Being just over a 100 km for the Ferry it would mean an short day - but that was what I felt like. Also trying to learn from experience - last year's mad dash to the Pyrenees ended in a drop. We spec out a good spot and get the tents up. Only just in time as the clouds roll in and heavy rain arrives. But the campsite restaurant and bar is dry and welcoming. There seems to be just one set evening meal so that's what we order: a serious salad followed by calamari and chips, a bottle of wine or a bottle of water, all for €10. That'll do it.

The walk wasnn't particularly taxing with the only climb a steady one at the start out of Poncebos, a tiny straggle of buildings, in to the wide and mostly bare early stages of the gorge. Gradually the gorge became narrower and its walls thick with vegetation, creating greater contrast with the alpine heights above.
