... after some frantic fiddling I enabled another map stored on the GPS and it started to work again. If Ian gets around to reading this when we are all home I hope it will bring a smile to his face!

I have shied away from mentioning the weather in case I give it the kiss of death but, just in case you haven't guessed from our pictures, we have been very lucky with the weather. I hope it holds for the rest of the trip.

On the way to above visited charming town Houffalize (see pics) deep in the Ardennes forest and witnessed a wonderful spectacle not 5 mins after arriving. Passing a lovely little crazy golf course in the heart of the town we witnessed a couple who must have been in their 70's having a real ding dong argument over their game together with much gesticulating and waving of putters. We went through the longest tunnel on our journey, 4.8km through the canal summit between the Marne and the Saone rivers.

Very rural journey for three days ...

... br> There is a French air force base outside of St Dizier and we spent most of the next day trying to catch photos of the Mirage jets taking off and landing overhead. One Bastille Day itself a flight of 4 went overhead low and loud! There is a great fascination here with low flying jets.

After ST Dizier we hit a second section (the first was up the canal 20 or so locks, around Joinville) of terrible weed. Just really out of control! We were headed for ...

A walk around the lake and a horses competition

"Everyone let's go and see the lake" says mum. Sometimes we have those moments when you say "oh really! Do we have to?" but we always just got to let it go. So that morning we went and had a walk around the lake - Le lac du Der. On our way driving to the lake we bought some free range eggs from a vending machine outside a farm - kind of like an honesty box like we have back home. ...
