Bienvenue en Suisse (Welcome to Switzerland)

Destination 405

km197'555

Not entirely shure, if I spend my last day in a foreign country, I head towards north. A stopover at Novi Ligure provides me finally the opportunity to send a notification to all family and friends about my remaining itinerary before return back home. The date has been fixed to the 29.
The ride up to Vercelly in the low lands was not that exciting like the sighting of the mountain of Mont Blanc in the far. Since my ...

... used my final day of my eurrail pass for this trip only to find that the trip from Visp station to the Zermatt was not valid despite being told by two train operators that it was. I also couldn't get through to the girl at the station that my eurrail pass allows me discounts for the train but she kept telling me, 'no, no, you can't use anymore days it's full'. Today wasn't the first time I have been stuffed around by the Swiss. It's hard to believe that Einstein was educated here.

At the top we came to a pretty lake and sat there for a bit to admire the view.

Despite our detour we had made it back to the cogwheel rail by 3:30pm so we decided to walk down to Zermatt instead. The signs said it was an hour and a half so we had plenty of time. I liked that it would all be downhill too!

We set out and again the signs were a bit mystifying in parts. Early ...

Day off for the navigator

... br>We had decided to travel via Aosta, so as to get as close to the roadbook outlined route as possible. About midday, we got our first views of Mont Blanc, or Monte Bianco, as the Italians know it. As we turned off the motorway, we could still see it, until the narrow winding roads took us across the other side of another mountain.

Now we realised this was our last chance to get the police photo, as soon we
wouldn't be in Italy any ...

The Alps are pretty cool, I guess

... day and got to experience traditional Swiss-German night life. When we returned at 8 pm the music had switched to a Swiss-German coverband that played randomly bad American music. The band's name: The Snout Snails. It never ceases to be amusing to listen to people who don't know English very well singing American songs. I was exhausted, but I forced myself to experience the culture until 12 before turning in for the night. However, the hostel was loud and cold ...

Back down from the Matterhorn

We woke "late" (8am) and were the last to leave our bunk. Skipping breakfast, we began our 5 hour journey back to Zermatt. We chose a route that would give us a different view of the valley, but involved 1800m of decent. We paid for it for the next few days. We arrived at our apartment and ...

Attempting to Not Die While Skiing

... of the day were difficult, but the longer we were on the hill, the steeper they got (and the more I wiped out). I was doing alright until I was flying down one hill completely out of control. Since nothing I was doing was helping me slow down, I headed for an embankment. I hit it going pretty fast and went flying. My skis flew off and managed to crack me across the top of my head. There was no blood, so the ...

... is something that I have never seen or felt before. The town is very quaint with a very secure feeling where everyone knows everyone. Lights twinkle off in the distance illuminating the tops of the Swiss Alps and if you look in any direction tonight you see the faint outline of the snow capped mountains. Tomorrow, we conquer the Matterhorn! But tonight, a beer in town at a local pub.

... a tunnel and then again into the station. Again, out of the station, we couldn't see it. We walked through the pretty little rustic town; past shops, small hotels, ski rental shops, always heading in the direction of the mountain. Actually, it is no surprise that we couldn't see it with mountains on either side of us. Finally, we made it to the end of the town and BAM there it was. We just stood there for a moment admiring its beauty in the beautiful ...
