The way home

As it turns out, filling that day wasn't so much of a problem.... we tootled out of town, found a beach, wandered about & looked at the boats; tootled back, found somewhere to eat, had a chat with a few Brits and - hey presto! - before you knew it, time for bed! But the one on board was a bit more of a challenge... all 13 hours of it! BIG ...

Reading Railroad

... by the breakdown of my bike and the need to kill several days in Paris, which I'd been to on enough occasions in the past that I had no desire for sightseeing. But it's also just incredibly well written, with a keen eye for detail, stripped of glamour, pretension, and moralization. Most of all, these cops are 3 dimensional humans, fighting the good, sisyphean fight armed with their wits, the increasingly rare ...

Pompei and all things Ferry like

... It was edible, if not a bit onthe lukewarm side. We scoffed down food with Calvin and chatted. After dinner we went back to "our seats" and gathered a group to play Phase 10, including Calvin. The game was good fun, other people were playing Guess Who and Barbie Uno. we wrapped it up midnight ish..and headed to bed. Cory came first, Calvin last..ah well.. the luck of the game. No alarm and giving breakfast a miss tomorrow..sleep in!
Arriving in Bari - Basilicata here we come!

... Italian, it was little surprise to find that this was once part of ancient Magna Graecia; in fact you are more likely to stumble upon Greek temples than you are Roman ruins. Known in Italy as a land of myth and fable, this little region was clearly full of surprises.

Whenever I think back to the first day in Basilicata, images of mountains, beautiful scenery and sunny skies fill my thoughts - a lovely start to the holiday!

This is a small world.

... are only a small number of sleeping cabins that have to be booked way in advance and cost a lot of money. So like a lot of other people our ticket was "deck space". Meaning we could find a piece of floor somewhere and sleep. It turned out to be a pretty uncomfortable nights rest tossing and turning with about 200 other people all crammed into every nook and cranny of the boat.
Trulli in Puglia

This is where Pietro, an old Italian guy, jumped into Bruce and navigated us to the trulli. He saved us from a traffic jam in the narrow streets of Puglia.

Pete was also called Pietro while in Italy. :-)

Trullo comes from the Greek word, "tholos" – meaning “dome”. See the pictures of the wee houses.

We found the Belvedere pub here too - also the name of our local in Aus – meaning “beautiful view”. It was beautiful.

Bari

... Nope, the next stop.

Bari (Or: The Randomest Place On Earth)

... 318r or so, and we hit an empty parking lot. Beyond the lot was the freeway entrance. Where was 320!?! We were standing in the lot looking around like idiots when a homeless man begging for money from the cars exiting the freeway took pity on us. He pointed towards a driveway jutting towards the left that seemed to go nowhere. Not really seeing any other option, and hoping we wouldn't be murdered around the corner, we took ...

stupid trains...

... bars to choose from and 2 restaurants as well (read: expensive, or affordable hmmm, you pick). Anything but pasta please! The waitstaff was extremely polite, mostly Polish actually, and the one kitchen guy that hit on me got yelled at by an older worker so HA. All in all, a decent ride. Kind of made me want to stay on another night or two just going back and forth across the Adriatic...but Greece is so compelling now, and I head to Patras.

The Mir

... I don´t have a hostel booked in Venice. So I was stuck wandering around Venice at 10:30pm until I stumbled on a cheap room (I was fully convinced and ready to have to sleep in some park or field because everything was so booked up). So instead I got a closet with 3 beds in it to share with two germans, at least it had a shower. Meeting Joel at the Venice airport tomorrow.
