... made us realize that we hadn't eaten properly in about 14 hours. So after a few hours of exploring, we had lunch at a classic Munich beerstube (beer hall and restaurant) recommended by our hosts, right near Old Town Square. After a meal of schnitzel and spatzle and pretzels and beer, I'm going to need some vegetables very soon before I implode.

... guitar. We unfortunately missed the traditional cuckoo-routine in the giant clock tower (by only half an hour). Then we dined on a romantic patio strewn with flowers and satin cushions and canopied like the interior of a sultan's tent, and there we enjoyed Italian fare served to us by a Russian waitress at a place that also served Portuguese food (the similarities between Canada and Germany continue to mount). Justin had his Spaghetti al Carbonara, Christina had her pumpkin gnocchi, ...
... was our last visit for the day. This car-free area leads through a great shopping district - in the 12th century this was the town's main commercial area. St Michael's Church sits in this area and is one of first great Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. It was built in the late 1500's and has a brilliantly decorated interior. Time to retreat back to our apartment but we will return to this area as there is more we want to see.
... had pork roast, potato and cheese soup, and strawberry cheesecake for our meal. Not to forget the liter beers, of course. Also, something cool about the restaurant is that the waitresses carry about 12, 1 liter beers at a time and there is a live polka, tradition German band there at the hall that periodically plays traditional German folk songs. It was quite the experience.
Overall, today was a very informative and cultural day. Off to Venice tomorrow.
Mosel, it is often nothing to write home about. In fact, Dan placed Lori under
a ban on ordering German wines in restaurants since she almost invariably was
not too thrilled when she tasted them.
Switzerland is not really noted for its booze production,
and as much as we wanted to, we saw absolutely no St. Bernard dogs walking around
with little brandy barrels attached to their collars. We did purchase a nice
pinot noir from Switzerland, ...
