Lazy beach day! WE DID: We borrowed bikes from our hotel and cycled to the Maezato beach (in front of the ANA hotel), where we rented a parasol and chairs and settled down (in the shade) for some companionable kindle time. We did take a dip in the sea to cool down a bit later but the water was so warm it wasn't that effective! James cycled to the supermarket late morning to get some lunch and we picnicked on the beach before some more relaxed time ...
The night before we started speaking to a couple in a bar and they invited us to join them on a beach day. While great as a base to reach the other Yaeyama Islands, Ishigaki is hard to get around without a car and so we jumped at the chance to be able to see some of the more remote beaches to the north of the island. WE DID: - ferry to Iriomote where we met our guide for the day - minibus from port to jungle - kayak down river to the sea through mangroves - trek through jungle to the basin of the waterfall for a cup of tea and a biscuit (and a waist high dip!) - trek up through the jungle to the top of the waterfall (passing a baby habu (poisonous snake, see Day 32 for other reference!) and crabs, frogs ...
WE DID: - monorail to Naha airport for our flight to Ishigaki, then bus from Ishigaki airport to the port - borrowed the hotel bicycles and cycled to the nearest beach, where we had a dip in the sea and relaxed on the sand - James really got into the beachy spirit here by buying himself ...
