      We took in the Rialto bridge (the black wooden infill at each arch is actually the back of the shops which face inwards and there are steps at the outer edges and in the middle)

      ... to bring the body of St. Mark back from a monastery in Alexandria (Eygpt) to Venice. For years the remains were mislaid until in 1094 (don't ask me how) when the body was rediscovered in a pillar. St. Mark now rests beneath the basilica's main altar. The Basilica of San Marco was stood opposite us as we reached the square. It's such a stunning Byzantine building with its spires, domes, columns and arches. It really catches the eye.       ... br> Although the weather was cooler, I was grateful that we visited in the Winter. As we stayed in Mestre the buses back to the hotel stop quite early, so by visiting in the Winter we were lucky to see Venice in the sun and at night as the sun went down. We took the same ride down the Grand Canal at night, which was spectacular. We even got to watch two cruise ships navigate through Venice as they made their way onto other destinations.       ... sick and feverish this morning and does not think she can move on to Venice. Dilemma, what to do, maybe we can stay here an extra day???? I wait until 7:30 to call Guiseppe and ask if we can stay on. Not possible he says, I will see you at 9:00 and he hangs up. I wake Susan up to give her the bad news, we must move on so she gets ready, takes some medicine and I am hoping the train will not be too crowded or noisy.

      ... bookings but it evidently closed in 2010 for conversion into apartments. No building activity was ongoing so I guess the economy had killed the project. The strange thing was that Trip Advisor had entries for 2012 saying what a great place to stay!!! For dinner that night we go in a new direction.
