Another short stop

Hallo zusammen,

Ohrid at night

Hallo zusammen,

So ...

Well, One More Day

I opt to chill out for the day and stay in Ohrid. Pretty, peaceful, good hostel, friendly people … The girls, recovering Celine and I explore the town. The highlights are the tiny, Orthodox churches from a half century ago. Lots of personality, interesting frescoes with a backdrop of the mountains and lake. The views as we ...

Off again!

... on tiny bumpy road by lake. Stop by some cops to enquire further. They turn out to be military, seem up to something suspicious, and are not at all amused to be quizzed by gawping foreigner!
Decide to give up quest and head for hotel. First one snooty and full; but second turns out to be pearl: right on lake, bustling little restaurant with excellent menu. Whew!
Turns out to be called 'Sveti Steafan's' (try saying that out loud!)

Cute Ohrid

... which looked over the lake. It reminded me of being back in Rwanda looking over at the Congo, but this time into Albania. Orhid is a really nice little touristy town that has not got the tourist levels of say some where in Greece or Croatia. There are little streets with shops and the old part of the town is really nice. Final thoughts on Macedonia Like I mentioned before I have been presently suprised with Macedonia. A lot of people wouldnt even know ...

Serenity at Lake Ohrid

... past us with centimetres to spare. Davor, our driver, drew our admiration for the way he negotiated these roads safely. All along the road are bunkers and pill boxes built during the Communist era, ostensibly against outside invaders but more as tokens of fear for the local population. We were told there are nearly 800,000 of them throughout Albania. We stopped in the town of Elbasan for lunch and then drove to the Albanian/Macedonian border. It took nearly two ...

Ohrid: Naughty or Nice???

... From replenishment, we headed to window shop and to buy some gifts. In the middle of all the chaos there is what is called Chinar. It is an 1,100 year old tree, which is being protected. It was cool looking and it had actually split in half, so it looks like 2 trees but is only 1. After just a little more looking, we went back to the car to drive back to our hotel. We took showers and checked emails and just enjoyed each other... when ...

On "Vacation"

... t want to go in there by myself. We quickly dipped into the pool, laid out in the sun to dry and then we headed back to our room to shower and change. Just a little later, Sashe and Suzana arrived and I met Sashe for the first time! I had seen him pictures prior, so I already knew what he looked like. After greeting for a bit, we headed to a little village called Vevchani. Quaint little village, famous for it's carnival. The ...

Old Lakes and Crazy Sailors

... stayed at Antonio's Guesthouse, which was a wonderful experience. Antonio met the bus from Skopje at the station and took us back to his home, where his mother took very good care of us. I had my own room for 10 Euro a night with a space heater (very important), and Wednesday night, Antonio even took us out to the popular party spot in town and explained which drinks were cheap. Unfortunately, vodka and tequila for 70 cents can make for a rough night.
