... In the first five minutes of listening to the bored voice of our guide point things out, he then drove us to a gas station to fill up, then got back on the road to half-heartedly point stuff out. I was hoping it was also short, but sadly, just kept driving is around while a kid in the back cried with his grandparents. Ridiculous. As the thunder began, I decided it was time to start trying to find my hotel again. I happened upon the funiculore that takes you ...

Day 274 1 hr, 1 km With the steep, wooded mountainside to my left and a valley that is quickly narrowing to my right it's only a few hundred meters and I'm in the next town, Messe. I know that the uphill climb is getting close, including my big goal: to cross the Splugenpass from Italy to Switzerland on foot. I know it was just planted here for the warm months, but seeing a banana tree in someone's yard just feels really unappropriate. C'mon folks, this is the ...

On the rocky shore of the river a group of young folks are camping out. Nice to see a few other folks enjoying the pleasure of sleeping out of doors (although admittedly my real motive is stinginess--not a love for sleeping under the stars!) It sound like there's a much higher waterfall up a bend in a slit like gorge--but I ...

... untarnished" mountain regions... not a lot of jobs... so people spend much of their lives elsewhere working... Finally I reach a point where the valley narrows. Up on a hilltop is another town--but a sign says there's a waterfall off to the side. I figure, no harm in taking a detour to see a waterfall. But by the time I get there it's too dark to really enjoy it, so I decide to just camp out here and continue on tomorrow. It's been a very full ...

... no trucks speeding through on elevated roads, just farmland... giving it a more pure, untarnished feel. It's still hours before nightfall, but the mountains have already blocked out the sun--except far ahead where rays of light stream through gaps in the mountains, lighting up a castle perched high up on a peak. I'm definitely feeling the magic of the Alps ...
