Going back home

... everything that any other country or continent can offer. It will take you many Bharatdarshan tours to discover her infinite variety. Mountains, snows and skiing in Kashmir & Himachal; exquisite mountain scenery with snow-capped hilltops, lakes and torrents extending from the Pir Panjal range in the north-west to the rain-soaked forests of Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. Excellent country for mountaineering, trekking, bird ...

Day 32 - back in Delhi

... on the way by someone I asked for directions that these guys were rip off merchants from Kashmir... Great!
Got to the shop and after 2 hours of waiting, arguing my point, worrying they may try to do something to me if I threatened to file a complaint and actually being told by one of the ladies working there that I should ask for a full refund (she said she was Hindu and they always try to rip us of!), I did actually walk out with a full ...

Day 4 -

... Kala ashamedly asks for 1000Rs to get a cab home (they live 25km away). I'm a bit shocked by this and think maybe if I give them 500Rs it will get them of my back, so i offer this amount to Kala and he refuses saying it isn't enough to get them home. I say fine and walk off home. They both join me and change the subject for a while until we get to the Main Bazaar where the topic is brought up again.
I've had enough so tell them I'll give the 1000Rs but they won't ...

The Himalayas - Try The Local Wine

... to have to try and sleep through it.
our final full day of trekking went down with ease the following day, bringing us to pothana, a beautiful village with an even more beautiful view of the valley below where pokhara lay. for all its hills and mountains, for some reason, nepal will sometimes flatten out completely. my view was of just this; the hills receding and turning into seemingly perfect flat land, out of which erupted a massive lone hill, wrapped in wispy cloud. i ...

Waiting game

How long can you make a bottle of water, 2 cokes and 2 samosas last? 8 hours if pushed. I had a 5 hour wait for a train connection, which evolved into 8. I became part of the furniture in a thankfully heavily air conditioned restaurant, within pan spitting distance of the station. If I knew about the delay I would have ...

Into India

... outside the airport door. It took us hours to get out the airport car park and was getting on for 3am when we pulled up down the dirt track that led to the hostel. We then wandered up a few alleyways before arriving at the Smiley Hotel...we had to wake the night porter up and he just bundled (yes literally bundled) me into the room opposite reception...I wasn't too happy about this but my protests just resulted in him taking my bag and putting it into the ...

Dog Day in Delhi

... when we were both lying on sarongs on the beach, faces up, eyes closed, halfway dreaming, listening to the waves roll in... and we hear the electronic shutter of some Indian kid's camera phone, and before either of us opened our eyes, I said, "uh-oh." Fits of laughter. And then there was my "going away" dinner, or two of them really, both times Gautam refused payment- the first time, the chef (Kishor) and Bittu (who did the ...

Final week in work - Bikanervala and Dilli Haat

... I could not buy something with those types of pictures, the guys face when pale when he though he'd lost the sale and he said he had some without the Karma Sutra pictures. Well the joke backfired as he ended up switching my Karma Sutra wall hanging to a none Karma Sutra version. I only found this out when I got home. I was sad to be leaving work. It had been a great 3 weeks and I felt I had been of some value in the knowledge I passed on. The ...
