Waking up, after a frustrating night of sleep, to see that Notre Dame beat Michigan 31-0, made it a great start to a fabulous day! We enjoyed our "substantial Tyrollean breakfast" of yogurt, fruit, breads, pastries, Nutella, meats and cheeses before heading out to mass. The church here in Casterotto is massive. The 50 minute ride to Castelrotto (or Kastleruth in German) made everything better for me-- gorgeous, green Alp views with Swiss chalets dotted around everywhere. We climbed higher and higher as my seatmate and I talked about world travels. She couldn't believe that, I, an American, had not been to the Grand Canyon! When we arrived, we went up the gondola to the Rifugio Lagazuoi, which is at 2750 meters. We were to stay there that night, so ...

... colours where water has seeped through and allowed lichen to grow on the rocks. We stopped at the Rifugio Lavaredo briefly and continued on to the Rifugio Locatelli, which was a very busy hut. Here I had a beer and Val had a mineral water. We went to to the summit of a mountain behind the hut with David, Hilary, Jules, Roy and Val, and I and took a few pictures. We saw some choughs flying and congregating in the rocks. Choughs are black birds which are relatively common in the ...

... Val Gherdëina in South Tyrol and Canazei in the Fascia Valley in Trentino. Then we travelled east over Passo Pordoi to reach Arabba. We stopped there for some refreshments. From there it was a short journey north over Passo Campolongo back to Corvara. In winter, this pass can be crossed on skis, but today we luxuriated in the warm 24 degree sunshine. We plan to have a relaxing rest of the day and an early night because tomorrow brings a long day of ...
