Day 53
Not much to say today. I was pretty lazy for some reason and did not leave the hotel until 11am. Someone else had borrowed the hotel bicycle so I had to get the local bus out to Anemurium ('place of the winds') to see the ancient ruins built by the Byzantines. The city was founded in the 1st century AD but hit hard by an earthquake around 580.
Since it was 110 km / 3 hour ...

Alanya, Antalya, Turkey stephanberlin... our stomachs started to make themselves an issue. (By the way, we saw a Famin hotel yesterday, one we had expected in the north of Ethiopia). Fortunately we were in the Banana capital of Turkey at that moment, Bent Yellow galore. That put off the hunger pangs. The town is even named after the monkey's favourite, Musakent. Musa being the genus name of all banana like plants, Muz being Turkish for Banana. Some 40 kilometers further we reached Gazipasha, but the ...
Alanya, Turkish Mediterranean Coast, Turkey robertandtanja... from our path to Syria and but Cappadocia is a place we've wanted to see since we first heard about it. We weren't disappointed . . . it was an incredible landscape of volcanic tuff eroded into fantastic shapes. And almost as incredible is what the ancient Christians did with it. Christians started coming here in the 3rd century to escape persecution and dug out homes which were easily defended, as well as churches and whole towns from the soft stone. You have to see it to believe it.
Fethiye, Turkey yoni... were huge drops on these narrow parts where they had piled up sand to do the road at a later date. Damo's expert driving got us through and once we arrived in Alanya it was off for some drinks (only 2 each as $8 for a beer) before crashing at 2am. As it is really just a drinking place we didn't take any photos of Alanya. Alanya is a haven for Germans and Scandinavians ...
Alanya, Antalya, Turkey kazanddamoWas up early this morning. Had breakfast, got on a bus, and rode for an hour from Antalya to Manavgat, to see the Manavgat Waterfalls, on the Manavgat River. (Manavgat Manavgat Manavgat...) They're not really anything huge; they're photogenic but not terribly interesting. They have, however, been developed as a tourist attraction, with a restaurant and ice cream stands and tons of little shops selling ...
Side, Turkey danbirchall... open by the river. Ants and I chose the under the stars option and it was another relaxing evening playing with the puppies(tree house owners 4 fluffy wee things) and a couple of quiets after a scramble up the gorge. Yesterday was a drive day with only a short stop for lunch and a shop in Kos. We in Olympos now some more ruins and a relaxing day at the beach. Gotta fly so more latter Cy and Ants
Olympos, Turkey antsHi everyone - thıs blog wıll turn out funny as we're on a Turkısh keyboard. We arrived in Istanbul 28th Aprıl to spend a few days checking out the sites before heading off on our middle east tour. We stayed in the backpacker district in Sultanahmet which is pretty geared up for kiwis and aussies. The locals probably know more maori than the kiwis. Dıd a boat tour down the ...
Salcuk, Turkey ants... magnate. Our hotel put green lightbulbs in the bedside lamps and, finally (because I'm tired), forced the question, "If you have to leave your lighted cigarette on the toilet seat, what are you in the bathroom for?"**. It has food poisoning inducing food. The next morning, having collected our car from the hidden rental agency, we set out for Alanya. We traveled along the cliff road. Here the land is a tumble of nutmeg coloured rocks rolling down to ...
