Night in Matsumoto

... some money on cab fare. Hopefully I can remember to ride on the left side of the street and the other vehicles remember to do the same. I'm also hoping that the rumors of English-speaking guides are true.

Adjusting my expectations... I had thought I'd zip through the castle and get to Kyoto early. Probably not. Everything takes longer than you think.

We heart monkeys :)

From Obuse, we travelled further along the train line, into the mountains and to a place called Yudanaka. In the winter you can go skiing around here but obviously there was no snow whilst we were here, just a bit of rain. The reason we came here was to visit the snow monkeys. These monkeys are macaques which come down the valley and are partial to bathing in the natural onsen (hot springs). We got a bus ...

Still Awake!!

Alright, so I ended up getting roughly an hour of sleep, but I think it was less since I kept waking up. I let one of the Japanese kids sleep in my room since he was locked out and ended up on the couch and then trying to sleep in one of the classrooms. After Nanami and I stayed up talking all night, I really didn't want to sleep that much. It was a lot to digest, but it was a lot of fun. Breakfast came and went and then we had a final Q&A ...

... and were able to ask them what they thought. We got some really interesting reactions, especially on the Nathan Book, which is fairly controversial. They didn't fully agree that kids were ridiculously crazy in the classroom, although there were plenty of incidences of it happening. After an amazing dinner, we once again broke out the alcohol ...

Kamikochi: Total Washout--Literally

... found shelter, it was in an overpriced restaurant for more soba, which I'm sick of by now. The saddest thing is that I know that this place has some really beautiful views--not only in postcard, but there's a section where you're walking on planks over a bog that is running between a forest of trees, and it's eerie and it's totally unique. Plus, occasionally, the snow open up and you see some shadows of mountains all around you. But four hours of dealing with hellish ...

World Heritage Caste in Matsumoto

... chef is focused and only working on mastering one dish. We spent most of our time in Matsumoto at the World Heritage Castle. The castle is only one of a few ancient wooden castles left in Japan, since most of the others burned down and have been reconstructed. Wandering through the castle grounds, we were approached by a volunteer guide, who gave us an amazing one hour free tour of the place. We wished we had had more time, as he would ...
