So, Wednesday morning, we're at sea level with Jane still dizzy and wobbly but thankfully not nauseous. We flew to Guayaquil in Ecuador, a place that sounded like it had been discovered by Geordie explorers. The flight, our last on LAN, was on a half-full brand-new Boeing 767, with full entertainment. I started to watch the Golden Compass. I knew the film was two hours long and the flight only one and a half, but I was strangely drawn to it....idiot. I'll have to buy the DVD now. We were met ...
Guayaquil, Ecuador terrybackOur second trip to the Oro Verde hotel, Guayaquil, was a quick overnight stay. We were delayed about four hours taking off from the Galapagos and got into the hotel at about 6pm. Our guide told us that we would need to leave at 4am the following morning for a 6.50am flight to Panama City, then on to Havana. So, a quick Friday night stroll along the Malecon Salado then a bite to eat at the hotel (skilfully steering Jane past her preferred haunt, the Fondue restaurant and in to the snack bar fo...
Guayaquil, Guayaquil, Ecuador terrybackFrom Peru we took a day bus to the Ecuador border and then headed to Guayquil from there. It seemed that it started to get greener and more humid and many, many more banana trees immediately after we crossed the border. When we got to the city, we went to the hostel, dropped our things off and walked around the city a bit. Guayaquil has a really nice Parque Central, but I bet that it's mostly known for a crime scene. Ecuador is a very poor country, so there is a lot of robbery and crime. We ...

... fumes from the buses. Having spent 3 days out of the city and a restful Sunday we had been lulled into a false sense of peace and tranquillity. The first few horn blasts and mouthfuls of dust and dirt bought us back to the reality of Quito.
After trouping our way around town doing odd jobs we headed for Pinchincha volcano which provided an easy ride up to 3500ms on a cable car, the last 500m walk to some viewing points, a light walk in comparison to the previous climbs we had ...

Just a quick update to let you know how things are going. I got back from the Galapagos last Monday and decided to stay in Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil, for a few days. I didn't really have much planned, just somewhere to go and relax for a few days. The hostel I stayed in was quite nice - leafy and safe and with all mod cons (except a hot shower but it was hot and sweaty anyway) but it was in an obscure suburb a long way from the centre of the action. It also had a ...

Guayaquil, Ecuador jenny.colville... and it would be easier to get a bus from there. So back on the bus. We arrive in Riobamba and I manage to get some food and a bus within half an hour. And Iīm told itīs 5 hours to Guayaquil. Fine. What I didnīt realise is 5 hours across the worst roads Iīve ever driven on through the Andes! Luckily I had two seats to myself and so managed to sleep for a bit of it! At least it was pretty. We wenr oce again through snow before descending into tropical condtions! So all ...

Guayaquil, Ecuador marichoube... actually...was called Tortilla de verde or something like that. We went to see the Museum of Arte Contemprorana and it was super nice, great collection, nice layout , well organised, nice music inside...really....its build almost in a shape of ship and it was kind of cool the viewpoint to the river in one of the corners.... Anyway I am glad I did the detour through Guayaquil despite all warnings of how dangerous it was and how not nice the city is and everything else...in the ...
