So, Wednesday morning, we're at sea level with Jane still dizzy and wobbly but thankfully not nauseous. We flew to Guayaquil in Ecuador, a place that sounded like it had been discovered by Geordie explorers. The flight, our last on LAN, was on a half-full brand-new Boeing 767, with full entertainment. I started to watch the Golden Compass. I knew the film was two hours long and the flight only one and a half, but I was strangely drawn to it....idiot. I'll have to buy the DVD now. We were met ...
Guayaquil, Ecuador terrybackOur second trip to the Oro Verde hotel, Guayaquil, was a quick overnight stay. We were delayed about four hours taking off from the Galapagos and got into the hotel at about 6pm. Our guide told us that we would need to leave at 4am the following morning for a 6.50am flight to Panama City, then on to Havana. So, a quick Friday night stroll along the Malecon Salado then a bite to eat at the hotel (skilfully steering Jane past her preferred haunt, the Fondue restaurant and in to the snack bar fo...
Guayaquil, Guayaquil, Ecuador terrybackFrom Peru we took a day bus to the Ecuador border and then headed to Guayquil from there. It seemed that it started to get greener and more humid and many, many more banana trees immediately after we crossed the border. When we got to the city, we went to the hostel, dropped our things off and walked around the city a bit. Guayaquil has a really nice Parque Central, but I bet that it's mostly known for a crime scene. Ecuador is a very poor country, so there is a lot of robbery and crime. We ...

... br>
Another big difference is the Spanish that is spoken here. In Quito, our poor Spanish was readily understood and it was easy to comprehend the Spanish spoken. Here it is like trying to speak French in France: one syllable out of place and they have no idea what you are saying. In addition, they mix their Spanish with local words and use Spanish differently. A simple example would be that instead of using the word Salidas (departures) they use Partidas.

In complete ...
Guayaquil, Ecuador mayitav5After sleeping soundly, away from the grating noises of Riobamba, we revisited the Malecon 2000 promenade so that we could appreciate its beauty in daylight. We walked along its whole stretch, from its restaurants and cinema complex in the North, through lush gardens, past modern statues, fountains and monuments to its shopping district in the south. Accross the road, there was a market hidden beneath the motorway underpass ...
Guayaquil, Ecuador iwanllyrevans... above). And the tour of the monastery itself was quite interesting. There are these frescos depicting the life of Francis of Assisi, dotted around a cloister. Nobody knows why, but some of the people in the paintings are missing their heads. Either they were removed later, or never completed. Anyway, it's pretty interesting. Apart from the San Francisco Monastery, Lima features some other really impressive ...
Guayaquil, Ecuador pjarbuckle84... do in a big, busy city. We bought snorkelling gear. We have been trying to organise a few things for our wedding in January. And we have been eating A LOT of fruitshakes. The 3 Canastas is the most amazing fruit cafe EVER! We also visited the Simon Bolivar Parque, a little green oasis in Downtown. There are giant iguanas wandering around everywhere, and turtles in a pond. I had no idea that iguanas climbed so high up trees. You had to watch where you walked.
Guayaquil, Ecuador jill-cam... electronic stuff (cords, cables, universal electricity converter, ...) that was also not there.

So....I huff it back to my room, throw open the door and curse myself for not finding my camera. I traveled from Cuenca only that morning...my day pack was in my possession the entire time and I didn't sleep on the bus. The bag was between my legs on the bus the whole time. I didn't even ...
