Today we drove through the plains of eastern Colorado to two more NPS sites. Many folks think of mountains when they think of Colorado, that's only about 2/3 correct; the eastern 1/3 of the state is just as boring and flat as Kansas & Nebraska. ... very long day - 13 hours in the car and plenty of road without rest stops or gas stations. In fact one of the roads we took, Route 10 had a detour and it was totally desolate. The only living thing I saw for about 44 miles were horses and cows. Today the temperature reached 105 but believe it or not there was a cool wind so it did not feel it. Thanks to all my friends and family who call me during the day to keep me ...

... over 50 miles and only three cars passed us from behind. Not many more passed us from the front. The road ahead looked like ones in the movies...nothing but desert and empty road! At around 11:10 we saw the Rockies drop down behind the horizon in our rear view mirror for the last time. The tip of Blanco Peak at over 14,000 feet was the last bit of them that we saw.

Today was another short driving one--we pulled into the La Junta KOA ...
