... the cows here were probably waiting to get shipped to the Cargill plant back in Fort Dodge to be made into ground beef (maybe for mcdonalds breakfast burgers!) and goodness knows what else. ... strong tailwinds continued for a little while only to have it change to a mostly crosswind, still, we were feeling good and wound up the day at La Junta with 150 miles, the longest yet! All in all, a terrific day. We are both still feeling good and strong and the next few days on flat land should not bring any change. Tomorrow we go on to Kansas and enter the land of Oz..

Once we drove out of the San Juan Valley on US 160 the sky was much clearer, and the temperature started to rise. After crossing La Veta Pass and going down the eastern side of it, the vegetation took a sharp turn into desert flora.
