... and nearly everyone you see has a cone of gelato in their hand, this is Polignano a Mare. It was such a typical Italian town and I loved it so much. One night at dinner I saw a young boy, no older than eight, drinking from a glass of wine. Everyone at my table was appalled, but I figured this was what my mom always talked about at Christmas! Ever since I can remember, my mom has always placed a glass of wine in front of me at dinner because it's just ...

Day 3. No rain today so I got the train to Alberobello which is about 10 km away. The view was amazing with all the little trulli houses scattered throughout the countryside. They're little round houses that the poor people used to live in. Now they've all been or are being done up. Still lots of dry stone walls around here. It's very agricultural. Had a good day wandering around Alberobello. Went into the tourist trulli and the Basillica of Medici. Gees it ...

So before your food comes they bring out a basket of bread and 2 slices of bruschetta like bread, 1 slice has olive oil and tomatoes on and the other slice has a fairly strong creamy cheese. All very yum. My food was delicious although the lemon sauce was quite tangy. The wine was very good, specially for a house wine. They don't charge for the bread and bruschetta. 18 euro all up. After lunch I went ...

Raining again this morning. It's quite cold too. Got a taxi to the station - 12 euro - about 5 mins driving. Pretty expensive. Regional train to Martina Franca - about 2 hours, 7.70 euros. Countryside is very flat and quite stony. There's some dry stone walls and I even saw a shepherd with his sheep. Lots of olive trees (some very old), grape vines, market gardens. Lots of little villages only about 5 mins apart (by train). There's older school kids on the train. Don't ...

Tuesday 23rd Dec - I know I'm getting a little repetitive, but ever since I saw this place on a TV program I have wanted to visit it in real life, so this was our chance as its only a short train trip from Bari. It's a picturesque village that is another World UNESCO heritage site for its unique "trulli" houses that have cone shaped roofs.
The history behind them is, once the whole town where just of trulli and being typical Italian - they were designed to fiddle ...
