    market garden style crops. We hit the coast at the city of Bari, a huge port
    with innumerable high rise flats along its outskirts. As we left Bari, driving north
    along the coast, the land gave way to manmade salt flats with huge mountains of
    salt and white egrets wading in the shallow pools. We could begin to see the
    Promontorio del Gargano rising above the rest of the landscape.
