Back to Bocas del Toro

We are getting good at traveling via water taxis. They are fast and cheap. What a beautiful way to travel as you can see the bottom of the clear waters, most of the time, or watch the waves break at a distance, watch dolphins play, and feel the sea breeze against your face. Today, we are back to Bocas. We are staying in Hotel Las Olas, which is a birght yellow, 3 story building with a deck overlooking the waters. Our hotel room costs $45 dollars with a full breakfast included, served on the d...

Boat trips to secluded beaches

We're staying at Hotel Olas right on the water...pretty amazing place. We went out on a boat trip today, saw dolphins, went snorkeling, ate at a restaurant in Macca Bite on Isla Bastiementos and chilled out at Red Frog Beach, also on Bastiementos. Gret trip, except for two grumpies that started demanding things and left early. But we met some great guys from Barcelona and two girls from Israel. Last night we ate at a great Thai-ish restaurant called Lemongrass and had beers at a place called ...

Panama City to Bocas Del Toro

We had flights in the mid afternoon to Bocas Del Toro, so we decided to a tour of the old city area. This was the most touristy area we found, although touristy was still fairly minimal. There were a few street vendors selling locally made necklaces, hats, old panama license plates. I almost got a license plate, but then wasn't sure what I would do with it, and having to travel for a month with that extra baggage didn't seem appealing. Later I inquired about mailing items, and UPS or FedEx is...

Bad day to be sick...

After making it to Puerto Viejo, we unloaded our gear and went searching for food. We had a huge lunch after rafting the last half of the river so we weren't too hungry. Thinking it would be "cool" to eat from a street vendor, we bought some "meat-on-a-stick" for a colone. BAD IDEA! After walking around the town, getting offered weed on many occasions, Bryan and I headed back to the "hotel". This place was horrible. Each room was like a horse stall, with hardly any ventalation ...

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica ... Day 6

... about where we were from and then he was on his way to the next table. After we ate, we strolled around the streets, found a hand painted blue bird that was painted on an actual bird feather. It was perfect for Melody back at Denver Health. We didn't find anything else that looked like a must have or caught our eye. Back to Casa Fiesta and I sat on the lanai and once again, enjoyed the evening sounds, warmth and beauty of the tropical night.

... we reverse the normal itinerary. This proved to cause problems for Ronaldo's (Erwin's helper) wife. So our first stop was to look at some 3 toed sloth's. These are cool animals that hang in trees and make turtles seem shifty and quick. Near Erwin's house there are some sloths hanging out in a tree. Since it would take them a week to get to the next tree, he was pretty sure they ...

... the bus came and got us just before 10 am. everything was good until the driver just STOPPED 10 km from the panama border with no explanation and everyone was really confused and then most people decided just to keep going on foot. chris and i loaded up our backpacks over our raingear and started walking trying to hitch a ride to the border and were finally successful in getting a ride and were flying along in the back of a pickup truck with a bunch of ...

Bocas Del Toro, very unfortunate events.

... t see Joey anymore. With as far out as he had been carried, the waves were obstructing our sight of him, making it hard to keep track of where he was. We had been told that police were called, so we waited at the beach but after waiting twenty minutes or so, no one showed. We went to the police station on Bastimentos, only to find that no one was there, and the doors locked. So we flagged down a water taxi and went to the police station on the main island ...

Snorkelling Tour

... to buy our own mask and snorkel for other areas of the Carribbean or Pacific along our trip. We ended the evening having a couple of beers with Kip (the US expat) at Hotel Bocas del Toro. They have a great terrace to the sea (on the sea) there, and as with most bars around Bocas they have happy hours daily from 5-7pm. Beers go for 75 cents, so even after 9 beers in between 3 people we only had to sort out $6.30 balboa.
