    After breakfast and photos Mr Yumoto drove us to the train. We went to Nagano then ran to catch an earlier train to Matsumoto, this caused much confusion at the gate but we made it . Boys relaxed in the hotel. We explored the town - nakamichi street and nawate street. Found the best indigo fabric shop ever, and bought some treasures, was also given lots of fabric gifts!     ... to heading down we popped up to where our ridge intersected a second ridge higher up and were rewarded with good views down the slopes to the west as well as along the spine of the mountains to the north and south. There are trails all along the ridges and huts sprinkled liberally about; next time, we’re coming back for a multi-day traverse!

    ... the scenery is even better, but of course that comes with very crowded trails. In summer it's a popular get-away for people who want to escape the heat, but the 'in-between'-ness of September was actually much better for me. Just the occasional 'Douzo, osakini' ('After you' / 'Please go first') to let oncoming hikers know they could pass me on the narrow paths, but besides that I felt I had the mountains for myself.
