... due to volcanic activity the ropeway is currently closed so a bus completes the circuit. My initial plan was to do the circuit anyway and use it to plan future stops in the area. However, the weather was going to be 55-65 degrees depending on elevation. We were going to use public transportation to get there so I thought it might be better to get Will and Mike moving in the great outdoors. ... would take all day with figuring out trains and finding the place in a little neighborhood. So after getting settled in and Jiji taking lots of pictures of the little traditional house, we set out to get lost and find some food. First thing went to the JR Rail Centre to exchange vouchers for 21 day Japan Rail pass. All very formal with lots of stamping and efficient service. Once you get the pass you then have to go to a separate area to make reservations. Booked all our train trips as we have green car pass, and just as well we did as one leg we could not get a reserved seat in the green car, so had to settle for a reserved seat in an ordinary car.

... way station and once back in town we scrambled to sort out a plan B. It was going to take too long to get back to the lake with any light left so we hopped on a bus and went to the base of another mountain to see the silver grass in bloom. Fall is apparently the best time to see the grass which is about 6-7 feet high and has a silver colour to it. We got there a bit too late for pictures in good light but the sunset reflecting off the clouds made for some pretty cool ...
