On to Switzerland

After breakfast at the hotel, Barb and I wandered around the town of Beaune. There were winding narrow streets with lots of shops, most selling wine or items related to wine. I relied on the advise of a wine shop owner to purchase a bottle of burgundy to drink on the bus later (it turned out to be terrific!). There was a street market going on and we bought some mustard. Dijon is just up the road and the mustard is world famous. About 10:45 we were on the bus and heading for Switzerland. The ...

2nd Day in Switzerland

After a delicious breakfast at the hotel (great yogurt, fresh bread and local cheeses)most of the tour members joined Jennifer for trip to the Schilthorn. We caught a bus right near our hotel which took us to the gondola. The gondola took us to Gimmelwald, then to Murren and finally to the Schilthorn. It was still early morning when we arrived and it was turning into a beautifully clear and sunny day. The view was priceless! I have seen many photos of the Alps, but the beauty and majesty of t...

Travelling into the mountains

Today was a train day. We left Venice just before 8am havi9ng hauled our luggage up and over the very steep bridge on the Grand Canal. We are travelling heavy, after 10 weeks of acquiring stuff and with a variety of clothes we have had to bring. The first leg of our journey took us to Milano Centrale where we changed trains for Spiez. Then we had a two hour trip northwards into Switzerland arriving at Spietz about 2pm. Grabbed a Foccacio on the train. the next shorter leg took us to Interlaken...

... expensive. We could see that there was some sort of market or festival going on beside the lake near the train station so we had fajitas and hot dogs for dinner while the girls had some fairy floss. There were guys selling roasted chestnuts, I had tried them years ago, but couldn't remember what they were like. Both Greg and I really liked them and I can understand why Europeans really miss them when they move to Australia.

Not Interlaken

... that I have much to compare it to, but I wouldn’t argue with that. Pictures will tell that story.

Shortly after I got to the hostel I met Bill, a retired engineer from Baltimore. He’s a pretty experienced hiker and I decided to go with him on a "six hour" hike the next day. That six hour hike turned into nearly 10, but it was entirely worth it. I can’t count the number of ...

Chocolate box picture perfect!

... to have a look around. Not much happening there... Probably wouldn't suggest going out of your way for a visit.

I have taken stacks of photos. Hopefully something to paint in amongst them all. Even though we have a lot of free time listed on our itinerary it doesn't really feel like there has been much free time. Have loved Lauterbrunnen but wont miss the place we stayed! Washed some clothes but now they just smell like the room!

... painting in my condition) and despite being a bit buggered, had a fantastic time! last weekend i took myself to Luzern (my host parents went away for the weekend and i didn`t fancy hanging around by myself here cooking and cleaning for their kids who are old enough to look after themselves) and didn`t get lost on the train. i walked the whole city and it was beautiful!! gate crashed a wedding in this lovely old church which was lovely. had the massive pipe organs going and ...

Yodelay! Gutentag! Lauterbrunnen

... up camp in Lauterbrunnen and dined on Fondu. After a hideously cold night in the tent in the valley we got all rugged up and took a train journey up the Jungfrau, the highest point in Europe. We enjoyed the sights and coldness of the top of Switzerland for the day before venturing down and wandering through the quaint little town, passed all ...

One Weekend Gone...

... calmer and less frazzled. I got to think about a lot of things as well. My job is ok. Certain aspects of it blow while others are really great. When it is all over I will be happy in the end, even if its just because I will be able to say that I did it. It also gives me the chance to travel a bit more and I love that. I really did have a good time this weekend. This is all despite how little there really is to do ...

I don't even know where to start i guess ...

... water, use the bathroom, and get a ride back. It was closer than turning around. The main reason, though, was that I was too ******n stubborn. I hadn't failed a hike on this vacation yet and I wasn't about to start now. This accomplishment would be my greatest victory. I refused to be defeated. 5PM. I was spent. It was straight up hill, too steep for my legs to handle. The peak wasn't that far, but the climb looked unachievable. I tried not to look up but instead just focused all ...
