      ... monasteries scattered across the island. We got all the way across to the palm beach of Vai right on the east coast, where we sat on the beach eating baklava, and climbed to a lookout for great views of the palm forest and towards the outlying islands, before we headed back to Mochlos.

      ... who had warships in the harbor and were bombing the island. Venizelos was the politician responsible for making Crete a part of Greece in 1913. There were beautiful views of the town from this hilltop. There is a small church there which was rebuilt with funds from Csar Nicholas the II.

      were on the right track after all, and not long afterwards, we came out near
      the waterfront, that we walked along to reach the fort initially. The bus back
      to Chania was very full, but we managed to get on, and had an uneventful trip
      back, and a quiet evening.

      of 4.6 m, and is completely hollow inside. Tamara could climb inside easily.

      ... 13 k to the exit, and that people with medical conditions, bad knees etc should not attempt it, and should talk to him first. Donkey transport was only available if you had a serious accident. Dave did check with him, as he has bad knees and high blood pressure, but he had a knee bandage which we bought the day before, and hired a walking stick, so we decided he could do it, which he did without much trouble, in fact we made very good time to the various check points.
