Pam's Visit: City #2 Thanksgiving!!

Today we took the S-Bahn to the University and I showed her where I go to class and where my institute is. Then we took the scenic walk back to the Altstadt, through the parks and along the river. We got supplies for the feast and headed back to Weststadt to help out. Surprisingly everything turned out ok. We played basketball and football before everything was finished ...

Pam's Visit: City #2 Day 1

We headed to the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof to get tickets back to Braunshweig. We stopped in Hannover for 1 hour and we quickly walked through some of the shopping section. We were tired when we finally arrived so we hung out in my room for a while just relaxing. We hung out with all of the URI students in Weststadt and it was a lot of fun.

"Wetten, dass?"

There was going to be part of a German tv show filmed in the main area in front of the Schloss. The show is called "Wetten, dass?" and it basically is a betting game where someone comes on the show and they bet that they can complete some sort of ridiculous task. If they do, the contestants from each bet get the chance to win something, this time it was an Audi. The show was actually filmed in the VW Halle some distance from Braunschweig and they had performers like the Black ...

Halloween in Germany!!

I went to get coffee in the Schloss with Wendy then we shopped around for some costumes. Wendy was a Berliner Kindl kid which was so cute!! I was Mutti (a mom) apron, wooden spoon and bandaids. Drew was an army cook with the huge fly swater or a burger flipper from the Euro store, Shawn was Santa Claus. Mason was a contractor. Dave was some creepy guy with a top hat. They don't really have very ...

Nature Walk with Wendy

It was a beautiful day outside so Wendy and I decided to take a walk in the Nature conservatory area on the edge of the city. It took a long time to get there (40 minutes) but we walked around for about 2 hours and saw some beautiful landscape. It was nice to get away from the city and enjoy the Fall colors.

That night there was a volleyball event at the Sports-zentrum. Soth, Steve, Shawn, Drew and I went to just ...

Hannover makes me grumpy!

So I can't really remember much about Hannover besides that there was nothing to see, nothing to do, the weather was bad and the campsite was overpriced! Dont get me wrong, I'm sure its a lovely place with nice weather and during the summer when the gardens are open which is where Hanovers charm is supposed to be. Wasn't our cup of tea so we moved on rather quickly. Byebye Hanover....maybe next time!

Hurray for Hannover!

... and also one of present day Hannover. These were interesting to look at and compare the damaged city to the rebuilt city. We had to wait about 20 minutes for the elevator to get to the top. This was probably one of the scariest elevator rides I’ve ever been on. I’d much rather ride the tower of terror over and over. First the elevator was tilted towards the outside of the building and then as it moved up in changed to tilt towards the ...

Graduation

Today we graduated from Summer School yaay! We had a mini ceremony where we received our papers saying the hours we completed and our grades. The teachers each gave a small speech but at least it was fairly short. I passed and got 6 credits towards my German major ...

Fischers Fritz fischt frische Fische...

After we got back to Braunschweig from Salzgitter we had a trip through the woods to a Fischhaus. Theres (one of our teachers) has a friend who owns a "fish farm" and was cooking us dinner. We took the bus from the theater to this woodsy area near the fast train and took a 30 min walk to the fish house, which was beautiful. It felt just like the woods in PA, deer like ...

Celle

... that close to, or over (no one seems to have been able to count) 40,000 people just dropped dead on the ground and were never buried. That is the most powerful image at Belson: the mass graves with the stone monuments on the front of each. 1000 total bodies buried here. 2,500 bodies buried here. And there aren't just a few of these. There were twenty to twenty-five mass grave-sites that I walked around along the lengthy path set within the memorial ...
