** 'The Bright Lights of South Korea **

... having blood tests, eye tests, hearing tests, sight tests, blood pressure check, height, weight, BMI, Xrays - poked and proded and then a lovely questionnaire asking me things like how much i like sex! Always interesting to be asked that by total strangers which i guess is just going to be recorded on my South Korean records! It was funny i guess and i met a funny little man there who gave me his number and said he would take me into the mountains on a tour ...

Chuseok holiday and teaching

... they lived a year somewhere. A lot lived in California with a parent. At Memorial Road, there were many Korea women getting TEFL masters degree and they brought their kids with them. It really pays off for the kids and it makes the class more enjoyable to have those few who are comfortable speaking in English and actually rather enjoy it, opposed to the other students whose parents probably forced them to go to English school. Or in the older kids case, they have ...

... found it under my binder. I starting prepping, and then Tina, the instructor over listening came in and starting talking to me about my classes. She started giving me advice and I sat there listening to her, hoping this would all end soon so that I could prep for my class, or she would be in here next time telling me I needed to prep more. Finally I started prepping, but I had barely touched marking the topic, main idea, and major details then it was time to ...

The first few days in Daegu

I finished training! I even passed! Training was so hard. I kept thinking, "what was I thinking coming to Korea!" and I even thought death would be better than this, because I thought I was going to fail and that would be really humiliating. But luckily, I'm not suicidal so I'm still here. I've learned when things suck, it usually goes up from there or at least I tell myself. Anyways, it's over and I was in Daegu, the city I will be teaching in, before I knew it. In fact I ...

... indication of spring's arrival, and it definitely whetted the appetite for cherry blosom season... I caught another bus up to Seokguram Grotto afterwards which was less impressive, although it afforded fantastic views out to the East Sea. It was very cold and windy at the top due to the sea breeze, and I was thankful to eventually return to downtown Gyeongju just before sunset. It was much warmer there, and I enjoyed a peaceful stroll around ...

Daegu Parks!

Yeah, almost 50 degrees today! Before I forget I want to express my appreciation for warm bathrooms (many here are not heated) and sitting on chairs to eat (traditional style is to sit on floor). Today, Wednesday, we visited Daegu National Museum, Suseong Park and Mt. Apsam, all unique and interesting. The museum depicted a lot of the traditional (I say that word a lot) lifestyles of eating, school, household items and rituals, history ...

... forest. No flashlight for him; that was just as well - he had probably been hiking these paths since childhood. It was a different story for me, and a sprained ankle wouldn't be a welcome start to my 28th year. I looked to my right - there was a quiet, but constant rumble from the city interrupted only occasionally by an odd car horn. Lights shone violet into the blackness, inviting me back to bed. I looked to my left - animals brayed and crowed ...

My first weekend.

... of the fact that I left the plethora of information I gathered in Jang's car. Despite this, I got down there without a hitch. My next goal was to find Daegu station. At first, I went the wrong way and ended up in an underground shopping mall, but here there were signs directing me toward the station. However, I also saw a sign directing me toward Kyobi books. I heard about this place in my guidebook. It was supposed to have lots ...

Korea makes me laugh!!

... a vitamin drink!! Anyways, he used to be an English teacher. So likes to try and speak to me. He talks like this: "At that time UH did you go there?" The UH represents him pointing his finger at me and raising his eyebrows and raising his voice (he his trying to confirm with me that i understand, but it's ridiculously scary!). He also says to me "You are getting fatter and fatter and fatter". What does one to say to that? I say "I know sir. And I'm awfully sorry about it ...
