Amsterdam is out to kill me

From personal near-death experiences, I would guess that the three most common ways to die in Amsterdam are to A. Trip on a cobblestone and plunge headlong into a murky canal, B. Get broadsided by a Netherlander multitasking at high speed on a bicycle, or C. Fall down your steep-ass Hotel/Home stairs.

My obvious statement of the day: Renovations to places you want to go suck when they are in progress. Especially considering that there might be dubious advantages when they are completed. Most notably, the Stedelijk Museum was (mostly) crossed off my list because of the massive rework of the building they are completing in 2009. The Rijksmuseum was smaller than I had anticipated and also seemed to have a bit of rework happening; but it didn't really disappoint. It is what it is... Rembrandt ...

SIMPLY EXCELLENT QUALITY

from A TripAdvisor Member
My friend and I stayed at Hotel New Amsterdam from 12 June to 15 June 2005 (3 nights). The room we had was fairly big and very clean. The coffee machine in the breakfast area was good. We had good quality coffee and breakfast. Ron, Ronald and the hotel were helpful and polite. In terms of location, we have nothing to complain about. It is near to the Central Train Station - a short walk. And, it is near to the Red Light District where you can get some good Chinese food. Besides, a short walk to Dam Square where you can do some shopping. The only negative point I can think of is the steep staircase - just be a little more cautious.

I would recommend the hop on and off Canal Cruise if you are in Amsterdam. Just be a little careful with your money and bag when U are in the Red Light District.

Loved the beautiful hotel, beautiful service, & my wife loved the coffee machine

my wife and i just returned from amsterdam, and i'm so excited about our experience in amsterdam and our stay at hotel new amsterdam, that i'm writing this review of the hotel, hoping that more people will visit and stay here. we arrived early, 10 am, and we were greeted with a warm smile, fresh coffee, and snacks. while we ate, our attendant took our luggage to our room, which happened to be ready. immediately we were able to sleep off our jet lag before we explored this awesome historical city. the hotel is located five minutes from central station; we were able to walk from our train with all our luggage in tow as well as walk to the canal bus stop to see many of the museums. the staff gave great directions with free city maps. our room was a very large room comparable to that of a standard american room, but this was no standard american room. we had our own balcony, hand-drawn birds on the wall, no cigarette smoke smell, very clean, and the most comfortable hotel beds we have ever slept on. for breakfast, we were given several choices of cereal, fantastic cheese and meats, fruit, breads, and coffee. also, this is a "straight friendly" hotel.

overall, this was our best experience at any hotel in any city, and we will definitely stay here again when we return to amsterdam. the service and staff were excellent, the hotel was excellent, and amstedam was excellent. :) we highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in amsterdam. if we could give a higher rating than excellent, we definitely would.

Beware! All that glitters isn't gold!

This hotel was recommended by friends who'd stayed before. We were welcomed warmly; even served coffee upon our arrival. Our rooms were charming. I couldn't believe it was only a 2-star! Being very tired & hungry after a long drive in from Germany, we left shortly for dinner & made it an early night. In those 2-3 hours we were gone, my brother's room (3rd floor) & my room (1st floor) were broken into. Our possessions were rummaged through; our backpack, stolen. (We hadn't taken the time to unpack yet. We wanted to get dinner first.) The backpack carried my laptop, my boyfriend's camera & passport. We were horrified. In all my travels, something like this has NEVER happened. And I've been in some SEEDY places! My brother's room, though broken-into, had nothing amiss. Our other 2 friends' room wasn't touched at all, perhaps because their dog was traveling with them. The receptionist acted upset--but not terribly--saying he couldn't understand how anyone got past him at the front desk to commit this crime. He called his boss who advised our rooms be changed (the doors wouldn't even close anymore!) & we be offered drinks in the lobby. My brother, boyfriend, & I nursed the cans of beer given us while the receptionist did a walk-thru of the hotel. He reported to us that no other room was broken into & there was no sign of forced entry. The burglar had to have entered through the reception area. Another note of concern: Why didn't anyone HEAR anything? Our room, in particular, was very close to the lobby. It was odd. The next day, very casually, the owner escorted us to the police station but he made us take the tram AND pay our way! I found that totally absurd. It was cold & snowing. He could've called a taxi. He only stayed with us at the station for 20-30 minutes. We were there 2+ hours filing the police report! We told the police we were very suspicious that this was an inside job. The owner was questioned about 2 men we observed sitting in the hotel lobby upon our arrival that Friday evening. The owner claimed they were "friends"; not guests. Hm. Upon check-out, I almost lost it when they wouldn't even comp my room the night of the break-in. The owner said, "I gave you a little discount on your bill. See?" I checked it again. It was a total of $20 off for 3 nights. What an insult. Even worse, the receptionist said to me, "Remember. You DID get free beer!" I started crying but was shown NO COMPASSION from these people. The entire time, the staff was non-chalant at best. The owner even tried to say that it's in his personality to not react to horrible things. I pretended to understand what he meant, but I really didn't. This is HIS hotel yet he was so undisturbed by what happened to his guests. You'd think that because his hotel was recommended too, that he'd make an extra effort to please. It was unbelieveable. And, quite honestly, they tried to make US feel guilty & wholly responsible for this $2,000+ loss we incurred. As we walked out the door, the owner said, almost as an after-thought, he'd contact his insurance & see if any restitution would be in store for us. Two months later, I have heard NOTHING despite emailing them repeatedly. Yes, this is a darling hotel close to everything & on a canal but don't be fooled. It is not SAFE, despite appearing so, & the staff will NOT care one lick about your safety or needs or any consequences. "Not our problem!" attitude. They simply don't know how to treat guests IF something wrong happens. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT STAYING AT THIS ESTABLISHMENT.

Great location and friendly staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel New Amsterdam is located on the charming Herengracht canal to the west of the city centre. The area is very quiet, an affluent dutch residential area, and there are lots of lovely restaurants and cafes nearby.

It is only ten minutes walk to the main shopping district of Amsterdam, and plenty of worthwhile exploring can be done on foot from the hotel.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is well run, clean and serves filling and tasty breakfasts. We stayed in room 331, on the third floor with a lovely canal view. Whilst the view was perfect, the room was definitely on the small side and there was very little storage space. The wet room-style shower ensuite was tiny. If you intend to only come back to the hotel to sleep then it is ideal.

I'd recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to keep clear of the tourist trap areas yet stay very central.

Loved it.

I've stayed in three hotels of varying quality before a friend (thank you, thank you Rodney!) recommended The New Amsterdam hotel to me and my partner. Location-wise: From the main station it's a very easy walk and there are numerous eateries around the hotel. We had asked for and were given one of their canal view rooms, fantastic. Room was spotless, comfy bed and a walk in shower to boot! Yes it's Amsterdam and a large converted house so of course you get steep stairs and don't expect American double King bedded rooms. Hotel staff genuinely exceptionally friendly and helpful, breakfast good. Will definately be going back.

Canal Hotel

Sparklingly clean, quiet, canalside hotel. The staff are outstandingly friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast, all day free fresh coffeee/tea. Being Easter there was a plentyful supply of complementary chocolate eggs.

It is a few minutes walk from Central Station but is in a very safe and traditional canal location.

Great place to stay for the weekend!

With so many hotels to pick from we were lucky enough to have chosen Hotel New Amsterdam. It is only a 10 minute walk from Central Station, yet located on a peaceful little part of the canal. The rooms are not huge but they are clean and pleasant. The stairs are a bit steep but you're in Amsterdam so that's what you'll get everywhere. It's nice to have coffee, tea and water available 24 hours. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I forgot an adapter and my telephone charger and they had spare ones that they were happy to let me borrow. There are some good restaurants close by (Harlem Cafe) and a great coffee house (Amnesia). It is easy to walk anywhere from the hotel-the redlight district about 10 minutes, and the Van Gogh or Rijksmuseum about 25 minutes. Enjoy!

Quiet and central

from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel New Amsterdam is located by the Herengracht canal, a very quiet and nice place although on walking distance from the Central Station. Newly renovated with funny trompe-l'oeuil here and there, my room was a double, but the bed was more like queen size. Bathroom nice with a large shower.

The staff was very friendly and you could get a cup of coffee (or cappuccino, etc) any hour. Breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice :-) I'll choose this hotel if I go back to Amsterdam!

Hotel New Amsterdam

This hotel is no longer named Hotel New York, instead is named Hotel New Amsterdam. It's a lovely little hotel right on the canal and a quiet street. It's a five minute walk to Central Station and another 15 minutes to most any other spot in the city. We stayed in 'attic' of the old canal house and it had such great charm - the stairs climbing up to the were quite steep at times, it was definitely worth it.
