An heiress to a massive fortune (her family held something like 70% of world reserves of copper, tin and silver in late 19th century), her father sank with the Titanic, she had been married twice, had two children and had returned to live in Paris in the early 30s, already establishing a collection of avant-garde art works. Political concerns galvanised her into aiming to collect one ...

      ... up its own bottom art. Loo rolls in the shape and volume of a grand piano was hard to take seriously as was block of concrete contain tape recording of a woman screaming playing in a loop - which of course you can't hear, which is apparently the 'art' - is she screaming if you can't hear it, bit like if a tree falls in a forest with no one to hear... Yada... Harrumph. ...

      ... on the other side of the island facing the sea and with the sun it couldn't have been more perfect to be on a patio outside. Unfortunately I had to leave early to go catch a water taxi back to the train station but it was definitely fun while it lasted. I could have spent so much more time in Venice, it is definitely a must see when traveling in Italy.

      ... with fine dining service; it leaves you feeling a bit empty, even though you just ate dinner...! Another issue I have with fine dining is that the restaurant has a way of imposing its own expectations on the diner. When one goes out to eat, it should be the restaurant trying to decipher the guests' expectations and then meeting them as best it can.       ... for 1 night. We caught the ferry from the port to St Marks Square (€8.00 each and the same for children) and walked the short distance to Hotel Kettle. It is a very nice, old hotel and our huge bedroom (plus little sitting room and bathroom) looked right out over a small canal. It is Derek's birthday present to me, so thank you very much for such a lovely treat. It was so hot and we were all running with sweat so a cold shower, change of clothes and a little siesta ...
