... We walked down the Weissgepbergasse (with the oldest remaining buildings in the city), we passed the former home of painter Albrecht Durer, we drank some Mokarabia, climbed the castle, found a traditional Bavarian coat for Pam, and then, since Germany is full of Turkish immigrants, I finally had some Turkish street food. After shooting off an email to some extended family in Frankfurt with some initial plans ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany the_stamms... remove it from the mold and lay a portion on a flat surface (to produce the flat side to sit in on a table), let it harden (which doesn’t take much time, then add the handle. In this case, the handle was red glass, which is the hardest to work with because it takes the highest temperature to keep it soft. Once one side of the handle is attached to the base, they have to reheat the red glass to re-soften it for molding. Once it is soft enough to mold, they use a metal bar to shape ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany ab10... later, you could lower your taxes if you redecorated in the baroque style covering up the timber. As a result you see both kinds of construction, sometimes on the same building. We went to the cathedral but it was not as impressive as others we’ve seen. However, it was built in the 11th century and houses the tombs of Emperor Henry II and Pope Clement II, the only Pope buried in Germany.
Walking through the cathedral square we came to the Old and New ...
Today, right after breakfast, we crossed the European Continental Divide. We went into a lock that dropped us down 81 ft. At the bottom it was, as our tour guide said, like being a spider in a bathtub with concrete walls rising up just inches from the sides of the ship.
We docked at ...
... had to take the old uncomfortable one...and it was even darker, and know I had no light. Damn! My bum hurt the next day. But that night we actually had to change hotels because the hostel was hosting about 50 8th graders! They came the night before and made more noise then I thought possible. We were happy to leave. So we changed to another hotel just down the street.
The next morning we got the bus and were off to Heidelberg.
Before we even got to Nuremburg the adventure began. Half way through the drive we got a little hungry. Stopping at a truckstop we picked up some McDonalds (The only time so far) and after eating was on our way. Chris then noticed after driving for a few minutes on the highway how windy it was….maybe because I forgot to close the side door of the van. Needless to say we pulled over and closed the door ...
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany ktchris... lost! Lucky after that we found a
biergarten and got some food! woo hoo. So back to the van we went to
get ready for our first night, popped the roof off, made the bed and
went to sleep.. well it took us ages and to be honest we didnt sleep
great being our first night and all....
Friday it was my turn to drive. After navigating the streets very
badly (we drove the wrong way up a one way st) we finally found a
supermarket then headed to salzburg.....
... section of road for more than 1 km here!) But as the saying goes, not all who wander are lost, and the next town is never more than a few km away, and always offers up a charming vista. Where water towers guided us to towns in the midwest, 13th century church steeples guide us here. Between the Bavarian timbers, red tile roofs, windowsill flower boxes, and cobblestone streets, even Bill is starting to overuse the word cute.
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany steffeff... sweets (including American donuts (Frisch und Lecker!) There is also a thick haze of bratwurst smoke in the air mingling with the steamy scents of hot gluhwein. There’s even some little car rides for kids and a small Ferris wheel. Basically they go all out for the season, and it’s open everyday. While the market lacks the craziness and popularity of Zwiebelmarkt, it certainly is fun to see the people out and about, thinking about the ...
