... Expensive at 70€ with a bottle of red but great food. Porcini funghi pasta and fish in a strong tomato and olive sauce finished with a creme brûlée - best meal yet. Rain all night and predicted to get worse and stay for few days so no point staying here, nothing to do in the rain. Prefer to spend wet day in train and come back when it's fine. Bought the last copy of a walk description book in village- lots great looking walks- some quite easy and some up ...

I think we were on the road before 08:00 this morning. We had a very short uphill section from our overnight stop to rejoin the delightful road which runs over the Cisa pass, and then we were on our way. ... courtyards with lush gardens and when I mentioned this to Betty she showed me a book she has that catalogues the 'hidden gardens of Piacenza'. They are incredible - lots of the blocks in the city centre are built around a garden courtyard so from the aerial photos you can see so many patches of green throughout the city. I just love the feeling of walking around and getting little glimpses of hidden treats - even if I don't get to experience them firsthand!

... look like they most likely grew up here in Italy and seem very much at ease. But I notice a passerby looking at them and then talking angrily on his phone. A few minutes later the police show up.

The police talk (politely it seems) to the guys, telling them they're not supposed to play volleyball in the park. Somehow I suspect that it wasn't the volleyball that got the caller angry, though...

... are fewer picnic spots in Italy than France but we were lucky to find a pretty one with tables in a wood.

Our Satnav did not have the place where we were going so we had to follow the written instructions from the Villa. The Borga Personalita , near Sovicille south east of Siena, is a huge converted farm house with 4 large double bedrooms each with en suite facilities all very attractively decorated and also with a huge lounge.
