Kathmandu, Nepal sonja_and_david... hard I tried to make it otherwise - it was so far from "happy travels". Then to add insult to injury - every time I could no longer bare it and started to cry, my nose inevitably would get runny and stuffy, so I'd have to breath through my mouth... bringing cold air over top of a mouthful of exposed nerves. My face, my mouth, my teeth and my entire being felt unbearably traumatized.
I don't mean this to be only a tale of woe. God – I'm feeling sorry for myself just writing it ...
... village 30 kilometers or so outside the city. I was actually surprised to learn of the sheer number of NGOs in Nepal doing work like this and was please when Simon and Anise arranged for me to visit for a night during my last weekend in Nepal.
The experience with the kids was amazing. They were so warm (they called all adults either Uncle or Auntie) and their ability to form a close community that took care of each other was inspiring (there were few ...
... and yet I failed so impressively to get a single decent photo. Defeated we headed to Bhaktapur via another beautiful but hair-raising country road.
This small town of 75,000 has about 1100 years of history and has several very old and ornate temples and monuments. As well as this the place has many local artisans showing their trade and a very calm and pleasant atmosphere. A ...
... man, the scene is a little different. We had agreed to meet up with Vijay and his friends after he got off work at 10 and they were going to take us to an authentic Nepali restaurant with Nepali dancing and all that local stuff. We got there a little late and the manager said that no one named Vijay worked there, sorry, goodbye. “What about a Mim Baharand?” I asked and the manager spun around with a smile and let Vijay ...
Kathmandu, Nepal redjaminEventually I made it to Kathmandu, but my concerns about the roads were not totally pointless and the 7-hour journey took actually 14 hours due to some accidents and landslides on the roads. This didn't leave me enough time in Kathmandu to sort out some things I would have wanted, like trying to get some more data from the old hard drive of my laptop, and pick up my credit card that one of the Kathmandu ...
Kathmandu, Nepal aerotrevel... hero m*rtyrs". We followed *nother th*t *dvised us "This pl*ce d*nger, t*ke * devious route" *nd ended up w*lking b*ck through the old town. You know those historic*l photos you see of old Irel*nd? Th*t's where I w*s. I time tr*velled. There w*s * cow outside every door, *nd c*lves outside most too. Kathmandu, Nepal marymc21... made it the full length of my journey, to get to my destination and to know that I did what I set out to do. However, I was so dreading leaving behind some of the best friends I've ever had.
We arrived at the Moonlight Hotel in the Thamel district and went to meet Karen in the Everest Steak House for dinner. Blimey O'Reilly did the steak live up to its reputation. Amy and I both chose the Filet Mignon as we both felt suitably meat-starved and it was de-flippin'-licious ...
... randomness of the universe converges in a special and funky way. First we woke up very early (for us), and took a bus up to Dakshinkali, a Hindu temple at the top of a mountain where people come on Tuesdays and Saturdays to sacrifice animals.
Before I go further: I'm learning that people here have a vastly different attitude towards death than we do. Take Pashupati where locals come to watch cremations on the banks of the Bagmati. I ...
