... city square, which gave the city a really busy feel. Most cities have a centre where you can sit and take in the surroundings, but at the moment in Amsterdam this area is filled with rides, arcade games and sweet stalls. Good for tourists, we bought some poffertjes (is that the spelling? Dutch pancakes?), and it made it easy to find your way around with the tall rides as a compass-point for the city. Today we took a tram to the Van Gogh museum. Simply wonderful, although we realised that the paintings we had seen in Paris were complimentary to what we saw today, and we have seen all of his important works. Seeing them in person is just so amazing. Reproductions in books cannot do the paintings justice. We walked to a nearby park, where ...

... have time. I find it to be sadly haunting. The road begins nowhere, and goes nowhere. The blackbirds seem to be gathering around him, waiting anxiously to escort him into the darkness of death. To me, the painting clearly portrays his utter hopelessness. I plan to read Van Gogh's biography again this summer, which should be especially meaningful to me after today's visit to the museum. We stopped at the museum shop on the way out, where I bought a ...
