Where old money and no money perfectly co-exsist

... had to wake up early to go to the Australia Zoo. This is the zoo that Steve Irwin founded and built and it was highly impressive.
A free bus came and picked me up from Noosa to take the drive out to the zoo at Beerawah. After hand feeding an Asian elephant a piece of fruit the next thing I did at the zoo was attend a show where they taunted Crocodiles to lunge out of the water and snap, exotic birds flew extremley close to people's heads and ...

... camp drinking all day. The Irish were particularly adamant on this point.
Despite these ramblings we set out on canoes again for day two, this time for a 16km paddle in the other direction. The paddle was more difficult, but much more rewarding as it took us down a remote and unpopulated branch of the river and to a fantastically appointed tree. This tree was not fantastic for its genetics, size, or any matter of its own doing ...

... for its fit out. It has a Cummins engine and an Alison gearbox. Apparently a lethal combination. The engine is a 5.9 litre diesel only managing between 4 and 5 kms per litre, depending on the terrain. The motorhome was built for Harry Sawtell, the then owner of Swagman, so it had all the bells and whistles when it was built. We are the fourth owner. The previous owner being Darryl Webster the Proprietor of Kangaroo Bus ...

We're all going to the zooo tomorrow

... round over our heads and a large saltwater croc was brought out to be fed at very close quarters. The day absolutely whizzed by (culminating in a great tour of the on-site wildlife animal hospital), and before we knew it, it was time to go home and Gemma and Elise arrived to pick us up.

We spent the evening with the two ladies and Adam at the local surf club for a very enjoyable dinner and a few games of Keno – which the whole country ...

Itinerary

... for flight to Vancouver No trip to Drumheller would be complete without a visit to the world famous Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology. And finally, it's on to Calgary airport for the flight to Vancouver. Note on mammals There is very little mention of mammals in the itinerary. This is not because I don't expect to see any, but rather that it's difficult to predict where and when we will see them. I fully expect to see: White-tailed ...

... all enclosures and have not escaped, yet. After this I saw a lot of animals in their enclosures. This zoo is best known for the crocodiles and they have really large and roomy areas for their animals. The crocs all had little stories about them and annocdotes from Steve about them. There were reminders of Steve everywhere. From a Statue of the Irwin family, to articles, pictures, etc.But it was all OK... until I went into the gift shop. Oh my. What an explosion of Irwin ...

Wanker is not a dirty word

... was trying to hop out. As we pulled up to Kiana I was seen to haul myself up with no care for flippers, tank or other human beings as I ripped my suit off. I explained that I glanced up from my Manta search to see a little (3 - 5 cm), transparent jellyfish with tentacles on each corner (about 30cm long) bob on past my right shoulder. I whewed, only to look forward and see another jellyfish bounce straight into my mask. This was the point where manbits climb into stomach and ...

... our vocal chords. After O'Malleys, we all adjourned back to our van for a few VB nightcaps. It was a great evening, saddened only by the fact that they are in Australia for only three weeks and this is their third week. How sad! How very sad! Still, looking on the bright side, we still have 7 months left of our little holiday. Today we were going to go on a harbour cruise but we were too lazy to move so we have planned to do that tomorrow instead.

First Days in the Far South

... of the travel anxiety, I headed northward along the coast, aimlessly weaving through residential streets, when I happily stumbled upon the beachhead where the Currimundi Lake meets the sea and a well-kept path meanders lakeside beneath old-growth gums and pines.  Unfortunately, by the time of this breakthrough I was already quite tired and so, rain-drenched and feeling coldly hollow in my chest, I turned homeward.       After a hot shower and some breakfast, my urge for ...
