Insanity Puts A Smile on My Face

Delhi is the most infuriating, dirty, untrustworthy, dodgy city that I have ever visited and yet I spent three days walking around there with a big smile on my face before retreating back to my hotel exhausted and riddled. The place is a jungle; pure and simple. Everyone there is fighting for a few bob and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

I arrived in the airport armed with my mate Brunos extensive advice ''Brace Yourself" and a photocopied map of the new Bazaar area of t...

Touring the Taj

I flew out of Japan on April 25th with my friend Isaac. We arrived in Delhi at 2:30am, and took a cab to our mothball invested hostel for 3 hours of sleep before waking up and driving to Agra. We took off at 8am and arrived around 12 in our private air-conditioned car. In Agra we first visited Itimad-Ud-Daulah (otherwise known as the Baby Taj)- the tomb of Mizra Ghiya Beg. It consisted of many beautiful buildings, and hoards of Indian tourists who wanted to take their picture with the visiti...

Volunteer Work in India

As many of you already know, I recently volunteered to build houses in India- many thanks to those of you who helped to donate to the cause. Longitude, the Rhode Island based NPO that I went through, organized a group of 22 volunteers (20 of which were Assistant Language Teachers from Japan, like myself.) We went to Andra Pradesh, in the south of India, and helped to build houses for the Dalits (or untouchables) in Kothasatram and Indiranagar. These two villages were rural, about as easy to ...

From the Mountains, back to the City

1/2/2008 Traveling back to Delhi... I left the Jaipur Inn around 8:30 am, well rested, and walked over the bridge to meet the pre-arranged awaiting taxi, which took me to Haridwar (passing a large statue of Shiva, a Hindu Lord, responsible for the creation of the Ganges River). I had time for a cup of chai and 'home made' Indian biscuits for brekkie, and a little look around at the shops and stalls/carts near the train station, and purchased a pair of socks. Toe socks (made so you can put you...

Apparently, I'm in India

Well, I was quite surprised this morning to wake up and discover that I was in India. I guess it makes sense, as I vaguely remember boarding a plane to Delhi. So what can I say about this country. Not a whole lot yet. I haven't so much as eaten here. I haven't ventured more than 5 feet from the hotel (where I found an internet cafe) The most prominent thing I've noticed is air pollution, which I'm not particularly thrilled about. I've decided that I'm going to invent a ride for amusement park...

Back in India

Hello World's worst blogger here. In my defense, the only internet place in Pokhora that is both fast and cheap seems to have an allergy to travelpod. Since my last entry I have helped the women and children on Bhangjhang fight a forest fire (goodness knws the men weren't there...they wer up at the teashop), been completely dissallusioned by the number and lack of cultural sensativity on the Nannapurna Circuit, wondered if I have mysteriously been plucked up and put into some fantasy world of...

Delhi

Most of what I saw of Delhi was from the inside of the hotel room because of some sort of food poisoning but from what I did see of Delhi it is a really amazing town. It reminds me a lot of New York City and has all the hustle and bustle a capital city should have. All of Delhi's pulic transport service run of compressed natural gas and there are signs that promote sustainablity which is cool but also makes the capital city hypocritical. This is the first time I have seen government funded su...

first few days

So I arrived on the 26th, two hours past midnight, at gandhi airport, new delhi. A guy from the namaskar hotel picked me up, for a small extra charge, which avoided me all the trouble that comes with hiring a taxi there. Delhi was pretty deserted at that time of day, I got to my room without trouble. The Hotel is located in the pahar ganj, a district located between the historical old delhi, that several mughal emperors founded, and new delhi, that was founded by the british. I spent three fu...
