... then asked them where a good Japanese Pub was (figured maybe I would meet people to eat with). They let me to some weird, obscure one that was a 10 min walk and looked like it was the downstairs of someone's house. I felt weird coming in and was the only one there. The menu had no english and very bad pictures. Eventually I just sort of let the old women that worked there pick something for me (talk about Russian roulette). A little after ...

Here we saw elephants carved by an artist who had never seen elephants, the Crying Dragon hall with its astounding acoustics, Sunset Gate with a purposely upside down pillar (so as not to be too perfect as to make the gods envious), the main hall with 100 hand-painted dragons (each one different), and, guarded by the sleeping cat and situated on a misty ...

... front door saying, " Hiking mountain today. Fuji." And our day began. We arrived at the Fifth Station of Mt Fuji mid-morning. As the mountain is only open July through mid-September, visitors flock during the short climbing season. I learned on our trip that it is the most climbed mountain in the world. Most hikers start at the Fifth Station as well as the place most tourists visit. It was crowded and developed. Restaurants, shops, buses was all that could be seen ...

Left our capsule hostel at 6am to get a direct bus to the start of our trail, Yoshida 5th Station (about 2.5 hours south west of Tokyo. Started hiking at 10am Surprised at how much 'climbing' was required rather than hiking. This is definitely not a trek you just decide to do there and then. Made it to our mountain hut for the night called Fujisan hotel before any other guests arrived. The temperature was much colder than what we've been used to. Bunk beds in the mountain hut were like ...
