Guatemala beginnings

Well we are here and away despite American Airlines being 2.5hours late leaving heathrow; this involved a tyre change amongst other delays, this nearly left us tight in Dallas biut it was Ok particularly as that flight was 30 minutes late too. So -100 points to American Airlines - my video screen didnīt work either so I watched movies with no sound on Lizīs screen. Mama Mia mute is a challenge - guess that song. Anyway to my great relief our driver was there and we drove over to Antigua which...

Climbing Pacaya - never again!

... horse, the ascend was naturally a piece of cake – although I could not help feeling sorry for the poor creature. But there was just no lave or volcano in sight. Until we finally reached a little plateau – and there I saw it: The characteristic conic shape of the volcano emitting a steady steam. But in between us and the peak there was this huge area of hardened lava and at the far distance I still saw people. I was afraid that I was going to be let off ...

Guitars and snoring men....

We arrived in Antigua after another 5 hour bus ride. On arrival, i was quite surprised on how big it is. It is just as I pictured in terms of the coloured colonial style buildings and cobble streets etc.

Cassie and I checked into The Black Cat Hostel, which we´d heard from the American guys that we met that it was a cool place to stay. I wouldn´t describe it as cool!! OK, its got a nice bar and its probably a cool little hang out ...

Lava'ing it!

... wandering around Antigua and taking some photos I caught up with him. I then tried to drag him along with me to a cool cafe that myself and the German guy had arranged to meet the aunt and niece from our volcanoe hike earlier that day, but he was too busy. So that evening I had a nice time drinking with the young German girl and her American aunt and my east German friend from the hostel. It all ended quietly though and I was in bed early for my trip to El Salvador the following morning.

Another week.. more places, less Spanish

... I’m enjoying amazing scenery, meeting fantastic people and but I’m not loving it like I did Africa. Maybe this is partly my own fault as I’m taking the convenient, safer and thus slightly more expensive option of shuttle buses that run from hostel to hostel and carry only other ‘white’ travellers, immediately separating you from the general public. I also feel I’m doing too much tick boxing and not enough travelling, going ...

Antigu...what?

When did I last write? 5 days ago? 6? Hmmm...that fact that I cannot remember leads me to believe that one of two things has happened: 1) I have reached the point in my trip where time no longer matters and a week feels the same as a month...in the best possible way; or 2) My short-term memory really is as bad as I fear. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night down here and cannot remember where I am--which wouldn´t be so bad if I weren´t waking up ...

This is the school you're building

... school or a teacher to take an interest in the village children) to recruit those kids for the next school year. Pretty cool. In Guatemala, even if you're 13 years old, if you've never been to school, it's not too late to start first grade and learn the three Rs and all ...

Another hotel in Antigua

... Went to see a live band last night at Los Peñas de Sol Latino, guitars and Andean pipes but not a condor paso in sight, thankfully. It´s so nice just hanging out in Antigua. Explored a ruined convent yesterday afternoon and we´ve been trying to find the ruined church (among many) we saw on the first afternoon just as it was closing

Best Day Yet!!

... the traffic and the scenery just got better and better. The volcanoes became visible in the moist haze and smog. Clouds were billowing around the tops. We started the climb up to the lake, and buy the end of the day had been to 8,800 feet! We had to layer up to keep warm. A far cry from the 97 degree temps we have be hitting. The Lake is rightly described as on of the prettiest in the world! We worked our way Down to the small but ...
