... Today Salzburg produces 100,000 tonnes of salt each year although it's a very minor source of income for the city, with the main activities being higher education and tourism. The German border is only 20 kms beyond the city. We had lunch at a little cafe about 20 metres from the house where Mozart was born and lived for his first 17 years. Coming home we were escorted through the Salzburg train station because of the number of Syrian refugees trying ...

Cool and dry this morning as we arrived in Linz for a very early rise to catch the Majestic Imperator train to Salzburg. Linz is the home of VAI Steel. The train is an exact replica of the Austrian Royals train from the 19th Century. The trip from Linz to Salzburg took 2 hours, but we were treated like royalty. We had the Royal Box, and we were served champagne, wine and canapés; truly a memorable experience.

We had a late brunch on the ship and then headed to Salzburg by bus. On the way up we made a stop in Mondsee, which is a town on a lake. It is also known as the location of the church from The Sound of Music. The lake was beautiful. Altogether it was a nearly 2 hour drive each way with about 3 hours in town, but it ...

... The bells were ringing calling the parishioners to church. We then turned around, cycled passed the boat and boarded the first little ferry to cross the river and join Rad 1, the cycle path along the Danube. Our first stop was at a farm where we had chocolate and poppy seed cake, washed down with apple juice as the farm didn't have a licence to sell coffee. Whilst at the farm we saw our ship, M S Normandia sail by. We had ...

We were up bright and early, 6.30 am, for Tony to build the bike. Rain was forecast so we wanted to unpack the bike from the boot before it started. Fortunately the site is next to a covered car park so Tony was able to build the bike undercover. We then cycled the bike up to the car park and caught the No.2 bus back (now we are expert on Passau buses!). Not a drop of rain fell on us. We ate the ...
