At last we got the chance to spend more than a couple of days in Maastricht! My cousin Annelies and her husband Jules live there and it's a wonderful city full of history and culture. We really enjoyed the hospitality of our hosts and Jen and Matt were able to visit for my birthday. We stopped in Maastricht and went through a church from the 1100's, it was very old and quite majestic. It was raining again today so that kept our wandering to a limit. We had some lunch and carried on. When we ...

... known as Hill 60 in Belgium. They tunnelled basically under no man's land to the German bunkers and in June 1917, 19 mines filled with 990,000 pounds of explosives were detonated under the German lines. Reportedly the blasts were heard in London and Dublin and killing 10,000 German soldiers. Australia lost just over 60 soldiers during the building and the final blasting of this tunnel.

I was really sad at the state of this site. It has been neglected and not treasured at ...
