Enter the "Tropical Evergreen Forest"

We took another overnighter, this time an overnight ferry, to Suratthani. It actually wasn't too bad at all. We arrived at 5 in the morning and made it to the bus station to catch the bus to Khao Sok National Park. At this point we met up with another Canadian couple from Red Deer, Alberta. Because of our "rustic" lodging in Koh Tao, we decided to splash out and stay in a "resort". It was pretty sweet actually. We stayed at the Morning Mist Resort. It was beautiful there. The cost wasn't bad ...

Khao Sok

In the evening of the 7th we boarded the overnight trin to Surat Thani. The seats in the train were folded down around 7 pm to become beds, above each lower bed another was folded down to create bunks. each bed had a blue curtain which gave some privacy, it was very noisy, but thankfully i had my trusty earplugs to get me through the night, i suppose the couple of beers i had with the group would have helped aswell! We arrived at the station around 8:30 and after a quick breakfast took a 2 ho...

Unexpected stop-over before Ko Tao

... the said hotel. I was worried it would be *****, but was pleasantly surprised on when I saw the gleaming entrance hall. My room was only £5 and great: it was huge with a king size bed, a desk, a wardrobe and an ensuite bathroom. I got changed then took the lift to the lobby then I headed out to the night market for dinner. This was my first taste of a Thai market, and I was very impressed. It stretched for a long distance down one main street and took a good five ...

Exploring the jungle in luxury!

... trekking on one of the islands to get great views of lake. Again there were more leeches here (but no armpit attacks!) and apparently at one point were being watched by a wild elephant (but because they can be really dangerous we werent alerted to the fact until we came back!).

As well as the wild elephants there are tigers (but they keep well hidden) and gibbons which we saw on our early morning kayak!

... from England, and Por from Thailand, in addition to Monica and Claudio - the Italian scientists who head up the organization. Leslie and John had volunteered with the organization on a number of previous occasions - they're teachers in a school for the deaf, and so help out with preparing lessons for the schoolchildren in the village. (They also gave us many signing lessons - I'm proud to say that I can now ask you what your hobbies are and call you a ******* in British ...

Welcome to the Jungle

... evergreen rainforest in the world". Our time at Khao Sok was relatively brief but enjoyable, despite it raining non-stop (maybe to be expected when visiting a rainforest?) to add a new damp odour to our already well-worn travel rags. Our first foray into the jungle was an unguided jaunt, making the clever decision to take a less well-trodden route, on the sound reasoning that we'd be going the other way on a ...

... While on the beach, it is hard not to think about the tragic tsunami event that occurred here on December 26th, 2004. There are now small shrines at most hotels, a large shrine under construction, and many makeshift memorial shrines along the beach dedicated to loved ones lost here on the day just over three years ago. There is a Tsunami Museum, built by a nonprofit group which is small, but informative. It presents the scientific explanation of ...

Angkor Wat & Beach Arrival

... of Southeast Asia. We had delicious Cambodian dinner that night at our hotel and got up bright and early the next day (about 4:30) to see sunrise at the temple. It was beautiful to see it in that light, although a bit cloudly that day. Then we toured Angkor Thom (The Great City) and a few of its temples and the royal palace within the city walls. We really enjoyed the Bayon temple with its captivating four-faced buddha towers. After lunch and a nap at our hotel, we ...
