... farming town of Baernzell. Sampled the local schnapps (called Bayernwurz), and enjoyed the local rye bread fresh from the 300 year old brick oven. After indulging in local specialities, we took a horse drawn carriage ride through the beautiful farmland, which was very peaceful.

41 kms AM - Wow, what a morning! The exhibits in the Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing were extraordinary; the Roman objects found buried there in 1950 are amazing! Metal breastplates, knee guards, shin guards, helmets, swords, silver coins etc in perfect condition. The Romans settled here in 70 AD and called the place "Sor-viodurum". PM - The Danube trail is well signposted, we have only lost it several times, mostly entering or leaving ...

... on sauerkraut and Lana turkey medallions all washed down with beer! A lot of high school kids dressed up in Bavarian costumes and yelling & shouting, we suspect High School maybe finished! Our accommodation along the Danube has varied from private guesthouses to four star Hotels. All have been excellent, great hosts in the Gasthaus to informative staff at the Hotels. And they all speak English, to varying ...
