A Little Side Trip

... jackets and scarves! But it gave me a bit of time to time over France, and the unplanned extra time I had.

Here’s a few funny cultural differences I observed while here.

- street side vending machines for condoms in every little town
- stop signs in English rather than “Arret”
- almost 7 Euro for a bottle of hair mousse, but only 2 Euros for a bottle of wine
- ink on money that ...

Bull without the Crap

After our invigorating tour of Arles we were wisked away to Saintes Maries de la Mer...in La Camargue, basically to a little tiny villa within 10 minute walking distance from the ocean. After checking into our villa, we strolled to the 1 grocery store in the town...4 graduate students in the tiny tiny grocery store...what do you think we bought? We all walked past the alcohol section and went straight for the bottle water aile ...

Corsican's Elba

... we will wait until La Spezia is ready for us; another wasted opportunity. We are in sight of Tellaro, which was the first place I ever stayed on holiday outside of the UK. In the morning, I shall be trying to pick out Villa May above its own private cove. (By definition it is a memorable place: I was last there in 1962!)

Time to leave Corsica :-(

... No buses on this route. After an 1.5 hrs without giving an indication for a hitch a driver stopped, the 3rd car to pass me in this time. So I got my ride to the town where I could catch public transport to Bastia and a ferry ticket to mainland France.

Backflip to Corsica

... but unfortunately our paths didn't cross this time. Best of luck Nathalie! I think it's appropriate to remind everyone that Canadian Girls Kick Ass! -Every day for the first three days, I was passed by the same groups of travellers multiple times a day. Sepcifically the German 4x4ers and the French bikers. They were taking so many breaks on the beaches and/or exploring the side roads so much that their linear progress was no ...

Up L'Herault valley

... a beer and then set off towards Clermont L'Herault. There is a lake just outside the town which looked a promising place to take lunch, but an orienteering group had taken over the place and none of the parking was accessible. We continued along L'Herault, hoping to find a nice place beside the river. At Aniane we found a sign for a picnic area 'au plan de l'eau'. Huge mistake! It started on a normal village road, but this led to ...

Trip around Cap Corse

Friday, September 22nd, 2007 When I left Belgium, I had a cold. During our first night in Switserland and then the crossing on the ferry, I got sicker and the cold turned into the flew. I have spent the last two days on aspirins but this night I haven't slept a wink. We ask our hosts where the nearest doctor is and that is in Saint-Florent so before leaving for our trip around the Cap Corse (the small ...

We set foot on Corsican soil

... now (basic hotel rooms ranging between 60 and 80 euros for a double room, breakfast nog included) but breakfast was included, there is a swimming pool and the location is magnificent in the middle of the vinyards. We check by phone to be sure that there is still a room available, which there is but unfortunately one day less than what we would have liked. We make an appointment to go and have a look.
