Chillin' out in the center of Costa Rica

Ahhh, after a smooth (well actually quite a bit bumpy) and easy jeep-boat-jeep ride from La Fortuna we've arrived in Monteverde. We rode in a small van to the lake and took a slow boat across the lake looking out at beautiful green mountains (they looked a little like Hawaii). After that we took another small van into town that dropped us off at Hotel Montelena. We didn't mind only paying $5 for a cramped, but tolerable room. We relaxed during the afternoon and planned for a HUGE day on Frida...

Back to the Mountains!

... caught a bus from Cobano to the ferry, took the ferry across the Gulfo de Nicoya, then caught a bus from Puntarenas to Santa Elena. All in all it took about 11 hours of traveling.

The town is very small, much like Boquete, but 100x more touristy. We were instantly bombarded by hotel employees trying to sell us rooms and tours. We basically told them to F-off and made our way down the street to Pension Santa Elena, which we had earmarked before arriving. It's a nice, cozy little ...

Action and adventure in the clouds

... what animals they would see that might be of interest to them (with the exception of Connie who did a coffee tasting tour instead because I couldn't guarantee him that he wouldn't see a snake), so myself and Jo set out ourselves on our intrepid adventure. With most typical timing, the heavens opened with a tremendous thunderstorm that coincided quite neatly with the two hour duration of the hike. The most tremendous thing about it, though, was not ...

Arenal Volcano

... its incredible view. Now the reason why the volcano is such a tourist attraction is that it is one of only few active volcanos in Costa Rica that has lava flowing from its summit every day. Now I would like to palm off the next descriptive paragraph as my own but unfortunately I would be lying, but I believe the description sums up the natural phenomenon better than my words would allow.....and as we are on the subject of coming clean I must admit that ...

... guide had pushed me over the edge, plummetting to the ground accompanied by the most convincing of tarzan yells of the group. I wish I could say it was planned, but the sheer terror of falling vertically before the elastic kicked elicited a great yelp and provided the rest of the group with a great deal of amusement. Gemma was more graceful in her screaming. The adrenaline continued to pump as we came to the last, and longest, of ...

... encased in a blue web. I (Nat) had never seen anything like this before! Big ups to Evan and Jarvey at El Camino info centre who organised our forest tours in Monteverde and helped with our transport. While fun, there is a sense in Monteverde that you are on a bit of a tour production line and it was not cheap doing all the activities we did. However they were all good fun and the animal houses in particular were terrific as they were a chance to see ...

The Story of Team Money

... we made Team Money shirts. At youth group, whenever one of us got onstage to sing or talk, we hooted and hollered from the back "Money! Money! Money! Oy! Oy! Oy!". since then Lin and Trish got married. their husbands have shirts that read "Married into Money". Trish is trying to get pregnant. The baby will get a shirt that reads 'Made of Money". So, like i said, it was great to have nicole join me and suzi. The more Money, the better.

La Fortuna/ Arenal Volcano

... sleep in tomorrow then go for a short hike or bike ride. 3.22 We slept in late this morning then were in the process of catching a cab up to a waterfall when Mike spotted Clark walking down the street. Very strange. We knew he would be in this area, but he is staying like 20 mins away from us. We hadn´t talked to him since he left, so randomly seeing him was very odd. It worked out though, they have a car, so they drove us to the ...
