During the night the wind howled around the refuge and the rain pelted the building. In the morning the weather forecast was for showers in the morning with winds up to 80 km per hour, and rain in the afternoon. Not very promising! We discussed descending to the valley with the guardian of the refuge, who told us it would be OK as long as we took care as one section of the track has very slippery rocks. We decided to go ahead as a whole day of playing scrabble on ...

... out. Starting the descent we overlooked a beautiful scene through gaps that were occasionally appearing in the clouds. There was a series of 4 lakes spread out before us about 350 meters below. Looking extremely tiny in this vastness we spotted the refuge which lifted our spirits. The path downwards was very rocky and, especially in the driving rain, difficult to negotiate. But by taking our time we reached the refuge ...

The village of Aulus is fairly nice but does not seem to live up to the build up a few different people over the last few days have given it. However, the gite is nice and clean and we spent a nice hour or so drinking wine and beer (and eating olives soaked in rosemary) under a shady tree at the local pub. Stats: Distance: 18 km Total ascent: 1030 meters Total descent: 920 meters Kathy and ...

... we should turn to the left of a farm fence. We immediately found ourselves in mud midway up our knees, so we abandoned that idea and went back along the channel in very muddy and, in Hans' case, internally wet boots! The channel followed the contour of the mountain, so the going was easy and it did not take us long to have the first five km behind us. At the end of this track we took to a forest trail that ...

... down was gradual and on a path through the woods that was very easy to walk on. Of course there were patches of slippery rock and mud in places, but the we worked our way down relatively easy. The only trouble was that the promised 10 km in our track notes (which we had known to be wrong from a single glance at the map) turned out to be 19.5 km, but after a short rest, a shower and doing some washing after our arrival we felt ready to have ...
