A smooth trip

Well everyone... I'm 45. It just happened, I woke up this morning, still alive. WOW! Anyway, I left a very wet and rainy Rome yesterday at 12:45. It was a perfect trip, timed to the minute with no extra waiting. I DID purchase pre-boarding, however. I took the Ryan air from Ciampino to Gerona, bus to Barcelona. funny thing, Ryan air greeted us to Barcelona with the familiar trumpet revelry of the Bull fights!! Fun. I took a cab to my hotel in the center near La Rambla. The Hotel is VERY nice ...

A pleasant day

Well, I couldn't sleep last night. It rained really hard so I stayed in but all night I thought I missed out. In fact, this whole weekend, I have done exactly as I have wanted at all times so I shouldn't feel like I am missing something. Meanwhile, I got up around 9:30, left my room between 10 and 10:30. I was a little scattered as to what to do, there are just so many things for me to see and do. Also, it was still a little rainy. I decided to go for a stroll through the gothic area, zig zag...

Hola from Barcelona

... and walked a few minutes to our hotel. Our hotel is very nice and is pretty central. We took a nice long walk to orient ourselves. We walked down La Rambla, the main tourist street with many shops, street performers and artists. We continued on to the harbour where we saw massive yatchs and made our way to the Barceloneta beach.

The beach had wonderful but very hot white sand. The water is part of the Mediterranean Sea ...

... pedal was a different color. We were told that this was a specially bred rose, although we didn't inspect one closely. So during our tour through the day there was the festive atmosphere of a great holiday accompanied by crowds of people out to enjoy this great day. The La Rambla was full of people stopping to talk or shop at the multitude of little swap meet like shops that lined the edge of the walking area. Along the way the building contained those chic fashion shops ...

Hablas Espanol? (uhh..I didn't) Learning languages

... you speak English and Spanish. It's a great way to meet more people and learn a foreign language. HOWEVER, this can somewhat be an unsaid dating service, so just be aware of creepy people that say "hey- let's meet up at my place at 3am for an intercambio...." You can post ads on www.loquo.com or on www.conmigo.com. Girls- make sure you request a girl if you're not trying to get laid (but if you are trying to get laid- this is an easy way!).

La Tomatina!!!

... By the time it was over -- you're only allowed to throw tomatoes for 1 hour! -- the streets were ankle (or calf in my case) deep in a gooey gazpacho of tomatoes, water, discarded flip-flops (some people had them duct-taped to their feet) and wadded up t-shirts. Clean up time! The locals helped out by using buckets of water from their balconies or turning on the hose for those who walked by. But we needed way more help than that! So we followed the ...

Barcelona at last!

... chocolate, white chocolate, chocolate cookies, white and dark truffles, chocolate cherries, chocolate oranges, chocolate mints, chocolate bonbons, chocolate covered almonds, chocolate toffees, chocolate in sticks, in bars, in chunks. I must've looked interested because the woman approached me and asked me if I needed anything, to which I replied: "I'm eating with my eyes, thank you." She giggled and looked away to the next potential sinner. We left the ...

The night from hell

... talked very late into the night, and that plus Dad and Josh snoring put mother in a bad mood. Everyone was pretty grumpy the next morning. *** Thursday morning we headed upstairs for our complimentary breakfast (or expensive breakfast considering the hostel price). Breakfast was set up on the roof balcony and consisted of coffee, toast, jam, and chocolate cake. Yes, chocolate cake. And it was good cake ...

The Metro and the Theif

I can't believe that I just wrote December! Yesterday I was very busy. It as raining like crazy. I ended up having to take the tube. My first stop was Sagrada Familia. It's a huge Cathedral that was begun about 120 years ago and it is not yet done. The original architect was Antonio Gaudi, Barcelona's favorite son. The outside was amazing. The ...
