... then we rushed the last 3/4 in about 5 minutes! We finally got to Ito and collected our car for three days. This region doesn't feature in the Lonely Planet but is a popular tourist spot for Japanese. We head south down the coast road and there are some lovely views. The countryside is rugged with little tunnels through the hills, vaguely reminiscent of the drive between the south of France and Italy with pretty towns built into the hillside. The drive in parts is quite ...

... you know what you're getting! The next day we rented bikes again. We went to the Imperial Palace for a tour. For this you have to apply prior to visiting, it's a free tour. To end our day we went up the Kyoto Tower for a night view of the city! The next day we ...

... day out in the sun and we decide to forego the walk to the observation deck and continue our way. Which was just as well, as when we walked back to the car two busloads of tourists arrived. From here you should be able to see Mount Fuji on a clear day, but it is hazy and Fuji-san, shy as he is, is hiding. We continue the winding road overlooking the awesome coastline. We notice two small rocky islands close to each other and connected by a thick rope. Could these be two sacred ...

This morning we take the Yamanoto Line to Tokyo station where we transfer to the Superview Odoriko train to Atami on the Izu Peninsula, about 90 min by train. Many train lines in Japan have their own jingle playing on the station and by now we know the Yamanoto jingle by heart. This upbeat tune sometimes plays in your head all day ;-) We have seats in the first car of the Superview Odoriko train, the seats are right behind the driver ...
