... ravines, autumn leaves and traditional Japanese houses that I had imagined would scatter the country side. The speed train was fast, quiet, spacious seats (on a standard ticket) and left on time. On arrival to Hakone we walked twenty minutes up a winding hill to our hotel to discover there is a 100 yen ($1) bus that goes from our hotel to the bus station on a loop! We used that bus for all future trips. ...

Here the hot springs, erupting geysers and bubbling pools of boiling mud dominate a fascinating landscape. We take the Hakone rope way from Sounzan down to Togendai on lake Ashinoko. We take a boat journey around the lake which is a water filled volcanic crater with a circumference of 18K. We are now making our way to Tokyo by ...

... drove up from Hakone, although only 34 km it took us over an hour. The roads are narrow and winding and the max speed limit we have encountered is 60km per hour. Kilometres mind, not even miles, it was often only 30km p/hr even in quite rural areas. It makes it easier for tourists though so no complaints here. The park itself was fairly small, quite easy to do in a day, but there were still long queues - an ...

      Mount Fuji? Where?

... got cold by the end of the day. Luckily we'd planned for a hot spa caper again, it really is the only thing to do when it's wet! I don't have photos for today, sorry, will load some up at the end of the trip (not sure who I'm telling this to, the odd thing about writing a blog is the thought that you are just writing it for future-you to ...
