... a journey of 18 weeks! It's a bold step, and somewhat expensive, being away for so long. We are fortunate to have some family and friends to stay with along the way, and Airbnb has turned up some very viable options for inexpensive accommodation, some fairly basic, but quite adequate, I hope! As things turned out George is able to be away with me for most of that time too, though the first 3 weeks are solo, while he is singing in the premiere production of Iain Grandage's opera ...

One thing you might not know about the tower is that it is actually a bell tower (also called a campanile) for the adjacent cathedral, it has seven bells, one for each note on the musical scale. It currently has an unintentional lean of just under 4 degrees due to poor preparation of its foundations when it first started to be built in 1173. When we got back, and before bed, Kathy and Christine thought it was time for some domestic duties - laundry. What a performance! We ...

... the vineyard). I couldn't find it at all, and after an argument with a gorse bush (it won) on a path that may or may not have led to the vineyard but appeared to be abandoned, I gave up. The walk (steep!) was part of the one I did yesterday morning, and is still the most beautiful of the walks I've seen (and the most taxing with my fear of falling from heights). In Volastra, a town I pass through en route to the supposed vineyard, I ask for directions ...

... cool to actually see it in person. The funniest part was watching everyone trying to perfect their picture of them holding up the tower. We grabbed some lunch at a restaurant with a great view of the tower and then laid down underneath it for a while. After that, we shopped a little and then went to the airport to catch our flight back to Frankfurt! It was such a great weekend in a beautiful place, I can't wait to go ...
