Dragon Infestation

Via Jenn: We arrived in Zurich just after 8am this morning. I'm going to quickly rant about US Airways and then it will be over. Exit row seats were really very small bulkhead seats with no TV. Flight attendants were more like disgruntled postal workers...service was throwing bagged Danish pastries at people. Brian made the mistake of asking what it was-he got a snarl in return. I was like the hungry puppy in the corner waiting for a morsel to fall from the table. After not eating the cold un...

Waterfalls, Mountains, Lakes

An early start as we intended to go to Lauterbrunnen and then catch a later train to Lucerne. We caught a bus from Lauterbrunnen to Trummelbach Falls and were the only ones at the falls for a while. It was so quiet that we could hear the cow bells. Trummelbach Falls is actually 10 glacier waterfalls inside a mountain in Lauterbrunnen Valley. This drains the water from the 3 major mountains which we saw on Friday-the Monch, the Jungfrau and the Eiger and carries 20 200 tonnes of boulder detrit...

Lucerne Sights

It had poured with rain overnight and we were concerned that the day was going to be the same, but it brightened up a bit and we headed off for a walk along the wall of the old city, where you could climb to the top of some of the towers. We made it up one and decided that was enough. We walked to the Dying Lion of Lucerne Monument which was a huge . This was right beside the Glacier Museum which was very interesting. While a guy was digging to build a wine cellar, he discovered some glacial ...

Snow on Pilatus Kulm

After breakfast at a cafe next door where we had yummy birchermuesli and great coffee, we headed for the lake where we caught a boat to Alpnachstad. The rain had cleared a little bit and what we could see was snow on mountains that hadn't had snow on the day before. We caught a cog railway up to Pilatus Kulm and this is the steepest cog railway in the world. As we get higher, the more snow we could see on the ground until it was very thick. The rain that we had cursed the night before was act...

Hallo....wie gehts???

... three course meal consisting of cheese fondue, bratwurst sausage and grated potatoes and finished with pavlova and ice cream. A very traditional swiss meal which was very delicious.

Hoping the winds had died down, we headed back to the lift to see if we could get up the top of Mount Pilatus. The story goes...or myth....that apparently Pontius Pilate came to this mountain for personal ...

Miss the Swiss

... here in Croatia is like a weird social experiment--locking up 40 college students in a hotel in Croatia... yesterday we finally left the resort complex and went into the town of Pula. It's a 40 minute walk or a 15 minute bus ride. I walked there and bussed back. It was a cool town, but kind of annoying to get to. It reminds me of Algeria. There's quite a few roman ruins around, which is really neat. And the main part of the ...

Last Stop- Lucerne

... for about 50% of our diet these last few months. But we were also a bit sad that our Europe trip we had looked forward to for so long was coming to an end and real life awaited..

Staying in Lucerne was a great idea. It was a really picturesque town with mountains as the backdrop to a nice river and little old town. We walked through the narrow streets along the river and climbed up some steps to walk ...

Mount Pilatus here we come!!

... and threw it at me. I think the only other people that were playing in the snow were the 3 year olds! But it was all good. We walked around the summit looked in the gift shop and restaurant and then we took a cogwheel train down the other side of the mountain. This cogwheel train is said to be the steepest in Europe. We had also taken the cogwheel train up a mountain in Norway and yeah...this is definitely steeper and a hell of a lot ...

SNOW!! Who knew a Canadian would be so excited!?!

... we were too early so Leanne wanted ice cream so we went and she had an ice cream and then by this time it was close to show time. We headed to the theatre to see 'This is It - the Michael Jackson movie'. We sat down to wait for the movie to start when we realized another feature of the european movie theatre...they sell alcohol! The movie was awesome...but half way through we experienced more European craziness...they have INTERMISSION!! Like ...

Swiss National Museum (Zurich)

... Everything is catalogued and labeled, and there are guide books available for self-guided tours. We were impressed with how much was available to see and view. Our older son was interested in the money exhibit in the museum called "Images of Power and Vanity", which showed the relationships between money, national wealth, and empire power through the ages. It was an interesting way to present European and world history ...
