From Chania I caught yet another bus to the south coast. This time to Paleohora. About 55km but still took 1.5 hours as the road goes over the mountain range and is relatively windy. Nice scenic road and some great vistas.
Paleohora a small resort town with many ex pats (British, German, Swedish) people living there either full time or for the 8 months of summer. Pretty busy with the summer influx of tourists. I think people like ...
... two restaurants gave us raki that could have been confused for vodka, this time the raki was smooth and almond flavored, perfect for sipping as we gazed out over the harbor hustle and bustle. After dinner we wandered through the streets and alleys within the old city wall. It is a great place to people watch and e architecture is beautiful. A note about restaurants. After breakfast we walked along the waterfront of the old Venetian harbor out to the light house to admire the ...

Chania was the setting off point for me to hike the Samaria gorge. An early morning bus (6am) to the top of the gorge (Omalos) (about 1 hour) and then a long walk downhill through the gorge. The first part was a long zig zag down to the base of the gorge ( from about 1300 meters). Then it was a 15km through the gorge going slightly down hill all the way (the way ...
... park, exactly 5 hours and 13km from the start. About 12 folks were sitting in the shade of a cafe/shack waiting to take a €1.50 bus ride for the last 3km out of the park and to the ferry. We decided to spend that money on ice cream, so we hiked to the minuscule town in 20 minutes to discover hundreds of tourists waiting for the ferry! Many of them had been there for hours after finishing the hike at the allotted times. At 5:30, ice creams in hand, we boarded ...
