Passing by the wars
In Krakow we got offered tours to Auschwitz. We were there 17 years ago and one visit to this center of human destruction is enough for a lifetime to realize how bestial people can be and to be thankful for the peaceful era in Europe we currently experience. I think though that each European citizen should pay a visit.

Slovakia is beautiful, and it is small.
... is relatively young: in the 1840'ies, it was standardized (but of course it had been spoken in many dialects before). Before, officials and the church had been speaking Czech and that had become incomprehensible for the normal Slovaks.
Also the love for nature and mountains (and thus for the Slovak country) is something 'new' (say 150 years or less) here as elsewhere.
Still, for the Slovaks, apparently, their identity as Slovakians is clearly defined and strong.

To get to all of the churches, I did a fair amount of driving. In Slovakia, you were required to have your headlights on during the day. I discovered that if my lights were off, other drivers would flash their headlights at me and point to the front of my car. If there was flashing without pointing, it was the (apparently) universal sign for "speed trap ahead".
