Day 117 Today was the start of an epic two day cycle ride called the Shimanami Kaido which crosses 6 small islands and gets you across from Honshu to Shikoku. We were a little sad to leave Onomichi as we didn't see much of it and it's meant to have a really nice temple walk up through the hills that the town sits on. We didn't have time though and the bike ride was waiting. We were going to send our bags across to Shikoku as we didn't want to cycle with that weight on ...
... could see what was happening. Then we went to the tasting area. There were lots to try and it was a help yourself deal so help ourselves we did! The next one we visited, Fukubijin, was like a small shop and had no tasting (boooooo!) but we bought a small bottle from here. The next place, Saijotsuru, had tastings and a very helpful lady who told us about different sake types. I couldn't resist getting a small bottle of plum sake. Then we found the last ...
... each time and after the last visit Erika ask if he'd lived in the states. He said "No, I like ZZ Top. I learn English from the Beetles and John Lennon." That took me by surprise and I let out a laugh sort of unexpectedly. I noticed the 3 guys next to us also laughed so I suspect they were getting the gist of the conversation. At any rate, we left some time after 11PM after having yet another amazing meal and a pretty good laugh with the locals. ...
... and a short walk later we had arrived at our hotel in Onomichi. Unfortunately at this point my feet are very sore and I am in no mood to go biking between any islands. As it turns out the weather is kind of rainy and gray and it doesn't take much to talk Erika into a rest day. We dine on Ramen a block from our hotel and call it a night pretty early. Nothing to see here, at least that we bothered to take photos of on this day.
... Putting this off, we headed back to the mainland to see the sights of Tomonoura. The Rough Guide had recommended some ruins as the best place to view the bay and get your bearings - after 4 wrong turns we finally found "the place" - which turned out to be 4 stray cats, a cemetery and a lot of stairs. The views were obstructed by buildings all around. We then searched for "the whisper bridge" again to no avail, but we did manage to taste the medicinal ...
