F##king Bolivia!!! All you can do is smile and say "well, that?s South America for ya" when things happen the way they did for us. It seems simple, clear cut...you get a bus from Peru into Bolivia. End of story. But, no, no,....some cosmic force was trying to keep us in Peru. One thing after the next. To start the adventure we woke up at 6AM in order to be at the terminal at 7AM and catch our bus leaving at 7:30AM. We bought tickets with Ormeno because it was a "better, well know, reputable c...

La Paz

We made it to La Paz in one piece, but it was quite scary!!! Every now and again you would be in a deep sleep and then suddenly the horn would start going (so you know we had met someone coming the other way) and then the brakes would slam on or we would swerve. Niether of us slept much, but we got to La Paz early! The Hotel Milton is great, it is straight out of the 70´s, but the staff are really friendly and the room is a good size, if a little cold - do you see a bit of a theme??? Yes Boli...

La Paz, the highest capital in the world

10th - 15th July 2008 Well after another bus ride up through Bolivia we arrived in La Paz, we we´re booked into the Hotel Milton which turned out to be a pretty good choice although the decor was something out of the 1970s with leather studied walls and laminate tiles on the walls in the bedroom! but it was in a great location. The first day we woke up with a market stretching out both ways along the street the hotel was in, it looked incredible, women dressed in traditional bolivian gear sit...

No peace in La Paz

The drive from Titicaca to La Paz is amazing even for the grumpiest of pessamists. Lakes, mountains, floating bus river crossings, the altiplain, snow-capped mountains, the minging satellite town/slum of El Alto and the dramatic drop down into La Paz itself. Bolivia and La Paz in particular seem to be gripped by revolutionary fervour at the moment. Through broken Spanish we managed to pick up that Evo Morales (the president) is facing some kind of referendum on his reforms which are largely a...

Back to La Paz

Having stayed an extra day in Rurre to chill out by the pool after all the exhausting not-being-at-work that we´ve been doing recently, we reluctantly flew back to La Paz. The following contains some references to bodily funcitons that some readers may find offensive, but who am I to stand in the way of the truth? The taxi driver back to the hotel again tried his best to rile me by taking us to where he wanted to go rather than anywhere near where we wanted to go and then refused to move anot...

Bowler hats, lots of traffic and a few pasties

... with traffic. The smell of urine everywhere despite seeing more public conveniences here than anywhere else we've been. Saltenas, little pasties filled with meat or chicken, sold from just about everywhere. Minibuses collecting and dropping people off, while other road users beep constantly. La Paz not as expected

Tuesday 14th - Saturday 18th April

You get what you pay for. We decided to pay cheap for a bus company masquerading as a premium company, and delivering far less. Toilets were basically a stop on the street and a prviate spot on the side of the road in the middle of the night, and food was purchasable from local sellers in street-cooked (and potentially likely to cause stomach upsets) stalls. We arrived in La Paz on the morning of Tuesday 14th April ...
