Prayag: serene holy city of Allahabad

... feet deep. After whiling away a good 1-1.5 hours there, we started returning. We were shown the Prayag (sangam) bridge- the only double decker bridge in India: having railroad at the first level and road at the second. It was a girder bridge as far as I can remember. People were throwing coins from trains into the Yamuna river. Holy it is indeed! After a good tour at the prayag, we had a nice breakfast at Nafis sweet shop and then proceeded to our ashram. We ...

... cheerio handshake and went downstairs for the emotional farewells with Mari (Helena was nowhere to be found). Agreed to keep in contact, and would possibly meet up in Rishikesh or London. I feel Rishiskesh is unlikely, as the Norwegians will be in Varanasi for 10ish more days doing some self imposed isolation in an ashram (no talking or even eye contact during that time - good luck to them I say). Goodbyes said, I was soon battling my way out of the old city and then ...

Incredible India

... the locals began to wander onto the bus. It was the worst one yet. Dirtier and more broken down than any we had rode before, leaving that ever looming question in the back of ones mind, will we get stranded today and if so where? The driver finally jumped in and went through his Puja routine. Puja is the act of showing reverence to a god, a spirit, or another aspect of the divine through invocations, prayers, or rituals. All the drivers in India perform Puja before disembarking on a ...

... that we'd make to Varanasi with dry belongings. We set sail watching a cremation on the riverbanks, what all Hindu's aspire to for a funeral as the Ganges is their holy river, before being met by the kitchen boat and being served lunch. Being a holy river meant no meat, eggs or alcohol, but the veggie combination provided was very appetizing, with more than double the amount of food needed, I don't think were losing any weight, but we are certainly eating quite healthily ...

Back to City Life

... but also to warn everyone I know......so here is your warning! Anyways, another major sight of Allahabad, actually the number one reason many people come here, is Sangam. Sangam is the place where the Yamuna and Ganges rivers meet. They are two of the holiest rivers in India and Hindus believe that a third (mythical) river also meets them here, coming from deep underground. Boating is a big buisness here, as is the makeshift market ...

One very short night in Jhansi

... we arrived at the bus station only half an hour later than we had originally expected to on the fancy bus. But that wasn't the only fortunate thing - the friendly chai man who is in charge of the bus schedule and ticket distribution while the normal office is closed told us that there is, in fact, a direct bus to Varanasi every day. We wouldn't be stranded. Trav's relief was palpable. We bought a ticket for the next day and set out to enjoy the town. Erin

Merry Christmas everyone!

Frohe Weihnachten allerseits, ich wuensche euch allen ein frohes Weihnachtsfest. Untertitel heute: Ein Alien landet in Allahabad.

towards the village

So I finally manage to find an internet place that works and the electricity doesn't keep cutting out. Travelling Northwards, away from Jaipur we stayed in a hotel on the edge of Agra...formerly known as the 'Sa Re Ga Ma' (the rhythm of life), it changed to a name I can't remember. It was a really beautiful place...so peaceful and calm with green fields and away from all the traffic of India. One of ...
